The objects moving past the monitor were important. First it added a kind of "Expanded" view or feeling of the motion of the character (i.e., you / he "felt" like he was travelling, instead of you / he just watching a movie on a screen), and 2, it shows the viewer that there was actual animation going on.

Cool movie.
