Talk about a photo collection..
It's something I never really thought of in this digital age, but it appears Bill Gates owns some company called Corbis. This company happens to have a very large collection of original photos and negatives covering much of the US and even world history.

I was using Corbis photos back in the 90s when I worked mainstream PR. It's an awesome resource.
