How do you turn-off Windows Data Execution Prevention??? - GoFuckYourself.com

We're talking XP Professional Edition here.

Every time I open a folder with an AVI file in it I get this annoying prompt.

In the past, I'd simply ignore the message and go about my business and then, after closing the file, I'd close the Data Execution Prevention message whereupon the screen would go blank for a few seconds and then reappear with all of my windows closed.

It was annoying, but I could live with it.

Now however, the computer will oftentimes freeze up altogether requiring a reboot.

There's nothing wrong with the computer itself.

The problem, as I understand it, is that Windows no longer likes one of my old video editing programs (Pinnacle Studio 9) and acts this way whether the program is open or closed.

Getting rid of this particular program is not an option, for reasons too lengthy to go into here.

So... anybody know how best to turn Windows Data Execution Prevention off completely and irrevocably?

Close, but no cigar.

The standard windows interface only allows you to turn it off for selected programs.

I've tried doing that already without resolving the issue.

Clearly, I need to turn the damn thing off in it's entirety; altogether and completely.

Suggestions anyone?

Your best bet is to turn that off in the BIOS.

I'm good at spanking bimbos, I'm good at making editing decisions, I'm a decent webmaster and I'm fairly good with a camera but I absolutely suck at computer 101.

Any chance you could dumb that down for me as in like all but draw me a diagram?

if it happens when you open a folder it must be using it ( pinnacle) to create a thumbnail, preview or something. you could try changing file associations with avi files

you could also try just removing pinnacle if you dont use it

You could either :

1. Click Start
2. Select Control Panel
3. Select System
4. Click the Advanced tab
5. In the Performance region select Settings
6. Click the Data Execute tab in the dialog box that opens
7. Select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except for those I select
8. Click Add.
9. The open dialog box will open. Browse and select your application.
10. Click Open
11. Click Apply
12. Click Ok
13. Reboot

Or, you could do what I did years ago and rid yourself of this and millions of other problems with one of these babies.

I tried that already... without effect.

That's why I'm wondering if there isn't some way to turn that damn Windows Data Execution Prevention protocol off altogether. As in to kill it completely.

I'm tempted, but I've grown rather fond of my old (PC only) programs in much the same way that I like my favorite beers

The odd thing here is that I have three other computers, all with the same Windows XP OS and all the same main programs (the latter all installed from the same discs) and two of the PC's have this Data Prevention issue and two don't.

Unfortunately of the two PC's without the issue, one is on it's last legs and the other is woefully under-powered for video editing.

Hmmm... I saw something to that effect on a tech forum somewhere, but I couldn't quite make out how to apply it in my instance.

Dumb question: doesn't Pinnacle need to be associated with AVI's in order to function?

Thing is I do use it almost daily.

A lot of people don't know this but of all the Pinnacle editions, Pinnacle 9 is the only one that allows you to work with four fully functional video tracks (even though it's not supposed to) and it's the most stable by far.
