Canadians who like guns.

Good news for you.

"OTTAWA ? The Conservative government says its MPs will celebrate after a historic vote to end the long-gun registry Wednesday evening, despite vehement opposition to the move in Quebec and much of urban Canada.

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews told reporters Wednesday, hours before the vote, that the government?s actions are long overdue.

?It does nothing to help put an end to gun crimes, nor has it saved one Canadian life,? he said."

This governement is of extreme-right , to the point that the son of a famous premier ( PET) and a federalist is saying that separation for Quebec would be on option that he would consider in regards to this awfull federal premier ( quote from : Justin Trudeau ) .

Lest not forget that we have Steven " baby bush " Harper as premier :
Quote:
Minister Toews has tabled the much vilified Investigating and Preventing Criminal Electronic Communications Act, a bill that provides additional powers to law enforcement to obtain information from Internet providers, at times without warrant
Naturally , we had the bushist statement :

" You are either with us, or with the pedophiles "

Sure, but I wouldn't mind seeing DC burn again! LOL

Battle of new Orleans by Johnny Horton

In 1814 we took a little trip
Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip.
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans
And we caught the bloody British in the town of New Orleans.

[Chorus:]
We fired our guns and the British kept a'comin.
There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago.
We fired once more and they began to runnin' on
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.

We looked down the river and we see'd the British come.
And there must have been a hundred of'em beatin' on the drum.
They stepped so high and they made the bugles ring.
We stood by our cotton bales and didn't say a thing.

[Chorus]

Old Hickory said we could take 'em by surprise
If we didn't fire our muskets 'til we looked 'em in the eye
We held our fire 'til we see'd their faces well.
Then we opened up with squirrel guns and really gave 'em ... well

[Chorus]

Yeah, they ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles
And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go.
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.**

We fired our cannon 'til the barrel melted down.
So we grabbed an alligator and we fought another round.
We filled his head with cannon balls, and powdered his behind
And when we touched the powder off, the gator lost his mind.

[Chorus]

Yeah, they ran through the briars and they ran through the brambles
And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go.
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn't catch 'em
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.**

As a gun owner myself within Canada I take pride in knowing that I follow all the rules and safety precautions set by our firearms office. I can see HOW this gun registry can aid our law enforcement officers in making people more accountable. I do not agree with the current way it is administered but perhaps a better solution could exist that would make a difference with firearm offences in this country.

While the order paper notice only hints at amendments to the Firearms Act, a source close to the file told QMI Agency the bill is expected to fully repeal the requirement to register long-guns. Excellent - I always was amazed at Canadian politicians who felt that two gang members would go, "Hey - before you give me that gun to rob a bank or take out a rival - IS IT REGISTERED properly?"

Criminals aren't going to do anything - responsible people will.

All this allows, is someone to go into a store, and buy a rifle and not register it with the government.

You can't go buy a handgun without:
1) Having the proper license (renewed every few years)
2) filling out the proper forms
-providing proof of need, status at gun club
-getting the proper registration transfer
3) getting authority to transport it home

Scrapping the long gun registry just means that all the farmers don't have to register their rifles... Wow. Big win...
The registry is still being maintained for restricted and prohibited guns... nothing has changed on that front.
It's a useless victory, and I don't understand why Quebec is so fired up to keep it... it *only* applies to rifles.

I see ....

Seems like Police does supprt the registry .. and that oposing are mainly Hillbillies from Alberta ....

Quote:
Supporters of the gun registry in Canada say it promotes responsible gun use, gives a record of where guns are located, what kinds of firearms there are, and who owns them.

The Liberals, New Democrats and Bloc Québécois all support the gun registry, saying it deters crime, saves lives and assists police.

Both the Canadian Police Association and the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police have spoken in support of the gun registry. They say it reduces the misuse of guns and makes it easier for police to track illegal guns. Police officers check the gun registry database about 6500 times a day, and use it to check whether they might expect to be met by a gun when responding to a domestic disturbance or break-in, to keep recreational guns out of the hands of the mentally ill, and to apply for search warrants and wire-taps.

What Opponents Say

Opponents of the gun registry say there are better ways to control the illegal use of weapons, including tougher sentences for gun crimes, controlling imports, and tightening border security.

Critics have two Auditor General Reports that show that gun registry costs have been out of control since the beginning of the gun registry program.

Many opponents argue that the gun registry is irrelevant in gun control since criminals will not register their guns.

Opponents of the gun registry in Canada include rural Canadians, farmers and hunters who say the gun registry penalizes legal gun owners and is a bureaucratic trap.

http://canadaonline.about.com/od/gun...registry_2.htm
Now I am fine with no registry .. as long as I do not have to register my car ,.. or my boat ... or my house ....

The cops can still check the registry for handguns.... It'll still be around, and still be highly regulated.
Long guns are an issue, but a minor one...

Here are a few stats from Canada:
Handguns account for 2/3's of firearm crime (and will still be in the registry)
30% of guns used in homicides were registered (so 70% were illegal and not in the registry anyways)
50% of guns used in suicides were registered (so again, half of them wouldn't even be in the registry).
78% of deaths involving a gun were suicides

Also, it's not just "Alberta Hillbillies" that like guns...
Quebec has 6,595 licenses per !00,000 people. Alberta has 6,949, Ontario has 4,349...
Quebec and Alberta are similar, Ontario has much less....
Additionally, Montreal has similar levels of gun violence to Calgary, and much more than Edmonton. (Per 100,000, Montreal had 34, Calgary had 35, Edmonton had 28).

Since I happen to live in both Montreal and Calgary, I can also say authoritatively - there are more gun ranges in Montreal, and the people that go them seem a lot sketchier. The gun owners in Alberta seem to be a lot more responsible..
Montreal gun owners all seem to be skinheads or bikers

My personal thoughts are that the money has been spent. Why not keep it around now that it's in place... If we were allowed a do-over, they should never have been allowed to spend the $2 billion building it...
