Diversification isn't necessarily what made him successful.

Finding what "clicked" for him did. Porn did ok for him. But when he got into his current biz he really took off.

I'm not sure he even spends any time at all on the porn biz anymore. His bikini site is pretty much dead traffic-wise.

So I'm guessing that it's not so much diversifying as it was that he found something that was a perfect fit for him and he concentrated on making that a success instead of diversifying and diluting his time and energy.

Actually the computer 'reader for the blind' market has been a massive source of revenue for one of the better inventors of the last 100 years. He turned it into a gold mine and continued releasing some amazing other inventions as well. Many tech-savvy people know exactly who Ray Kurzweil is, in part because of his computers for the blind inventions ;)

But he is still no Steve Jobs, and that's what DWB said.

I have run into a few very successful guys in our biz who have long since retired who don't even know how to use photoshop or put down a line of html.. blows my mind. From what I can see the guys that get a decent lump of cash to go and hire the right people to do everything to propel their winning ideas forward seem to cross the finish line first.

I've never been a billionaire. However, having had the chance to work with extremely successful people in three completely different industries during my life, the biggest thing that they all had in common was something Nathan pointed out: Timing

A billionaire with a capital "B" once told me he thinks business is like surfing. There are a lot of people capable of riding waves. The guys who are able to go huge successfully are the ones who are best at picking the right wave at the right time, not necessarily the guys who have the best balance or the fanciest surf board.

I have seen his statement proven true over and over again. Whether you call that luck or skill or a combination of the two, that's the difference between having 3 employees and having 3000 according to him.

You do like to argue semantics....

What DWB said was "Everything Jobs said in that speech is true, but if Steve Jobs had only invented a braille computer for the blind, none of us would know who he is" and yet the fact is Ray Kurzweil is quite famous, extremely successful and has earned a slew of recognition... mostly because of exactly that invention. The point being, if your idea and timing is right, even with a very small pool you can be a monster of a fish.
