Police: Man with CP called us, fearing FBI

Republic police (a small town near Springfield MO) said a man called with CP on his computer and said a message from the FBI that he would be arrested. Another virus scam.

Hope the cops come to their senses and realize someone put this on his computer to blackmail him.

Interesting. Kind of sounds like the guy recognizes that he has a problem and wants help... but he may have never stepped forward if that virus hadnt been installed.

No one was blackmailing him... it is a current virus going around. I've seen it on a site searching for foot fetish related sites and can't remember where I saw it. It was on a CJ network.

Computer shows only this Fake FBI warning and you can unlock your computer for making a $200 payment. I couldn't exit the window nor take a screen shot, just had to reboot and then did a system restore just in case.

The guy obviously had a guilty conscience though.

Commonly called the UKash virus - pops up an official looking police/FBI screen, locks up the computer...and demands money to unlock the system.

It's making the rounds lately. Malwarebytes anti-malware software does a good job of removing it.

Only the simple ones seemed to get caught for the most part in situations like this.

Unfortunately jb is extremely prevalent and I'd venture to say anyone who has looked at porn has illegal material on their computer.

Smart thing to do is have image backups of your computer and if anything every happens, just do a clean wipe of 0's and restore.
There's all this talk about Police and forensic specialist being able to recover anything off a hard drive but the truth is with 1 pass of 0's on modern drives they're lucky to even reliably recover just a few bits.

 to this guy.

Very easy to remove that virus. Just log in with another user and so a malware scan
