It's the on access scanning component which can cause problems when both are enabled. Basically each time a file is accessed it is automatically scanned. When you have two anti-virus programs scanning automatically in this way it can cause noticeable delays and at times mess things up badly if something screws up and they interact poorly with one another. What people usually do is disable one of the on access scanners and use the other one just for manual scans.

Security essentials. All those other *free* ones update then beat you down with popups until you either buy the license or delete it and then go to security essentials.

The best antivirus is your own common sense. I haven't needed an AV program in years.

I just upload potentially suspicious files to jotti.org and it goes through like 20 different scans there.

Screw all those other "free" programs (and most of the paid ones too).

Malwarebytes is the one exception to the 'don't run two programs at once' rule. I'm not sure exactly why, but mwb scans don't interfere with any other antivirus program, so it's safe to use alongside any other option

I've ran both on quite a few PCs, so if I have to sum it up - Essentials catches fwwer threats, but it is unobtrusive, so it gets my 5 stars, while AVG will get 4+

AVAST - I seriously wish somebody sued these cockroaches to the ground, one of their previous verisions was cutting off your Internet connection when a threat was found, no warnings, nothing, fuck them; not touhcing their shit ever again

Personally I dont use free antivirus, I did when I was a student back in the days though.
Here's a list of free antivirus and other paid security software.

By the way I got 1600 days left on my bitdefender license

I actually run a PC repair / virus removal business as my mainstream company...

I would recommend a multi layered approach to get the best coverage

Paid Antivirus / Firewall + Microsoft Security Essentials as your primary running side by side

Malwarebytes + Spybot as your weekly, monthly maintenance scanners

I've seen many things get past AVG Free, AVAST, Comodo....etc.....honestly..it costs $40 for a 3 pc copy of McAfee for a year.....if you can't afford that...your in the wrong business here....

Personally I go with McAfee for home and their Security As A Service for my business clients...

Norton is just is a pain in the ass, its spread to far across the system dealing with windows services that it doesn't even need to...and it just is too intensive load on the system process for what it actually does...

NORTON is good, but takes too much resources if not configured properly.

AVG sucks, I tried both the free and premium, BOTH SUCK so much, the update feature always hangs, and has lots of problems... Cant believe some people use it, when it has so much problems.

Im going to try KASPERSKY and Microsoft Essentials next.
