Claim seeks $100 million for child survivor of Connecticut school shooting

Our legal system really is fucked. I mean really, the school board was supposed to have foreseen the actions of a mentally defective idiot? And by suing a taxpayer funded educational system you are actually just suing your neighbors.

"A $100 million claim on behalf of a 6-year-old survivor is the first legal action to come out of the Connecticut school shooting that left 26 children and adults dead two weeks ago.

The unidentified client, referred to as Jill Doe, heard "cursing, screaming, and shooting" over the school intercom when the gunman, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, opened fire, according to the claim filed by New Haven-based attorney Irv Pinsky.

"As a consequence, the ... child has sustained emotional and psychological trauma and injury, the nature and extent of which are yet to be determined," the claim said."

Bring out the vultures!!!

Sure, I too want compensation for the baseball that left me with a severe concussion that forced me to be on lithium for 2 years also!

Though they are fun, my kids will not be doing sports that involve head trama, or kept to a minimum at least.

What instigates the whole ordeals is lawyers contact the families and let them in on what they can truly get out of this.

Absolutely crazy, this should be thrown out of court.

This is one of the reasons our country is going to shit, vultures trying to capitalize on everything they can just to get a quick payout.

These kinds of laws are thinking about what the child has seen or what the child has not seen in front of his/her eyes. This is important. Has the child seen murder / illegal drugs / violence / other crimes… That could be emotional pain. Was the child physically hurt… How smart is the child, etc… A lot of politics here. $100 million will not bring back dead people back to life. Anyway, survivors sure can be helped. Hope the right decisions are made…

The school was entrusted with the safety of their child and failed to protect their child. The school should have been aware this was a possibility and failed to take action.

Although $100 million is steep.

Seriously? And just what is a school supposed to do security wise besides lock the damn doors? Jesus our entire country is turning into a bunch of pussies that constantly need protection from real life. Sometimes serious shit just happens.

What do you propose, putting worthless mall cops with guns at the entry/exit points of every school in America?

How about allowing kids to live and learn in a free environment knowing this is far better than instilling fear and paranoia over incidents that are as improbable and hard to defend against as getting struck by lightning.

Without a crystal ball - you can't prepare for every eventuality. It's just not possible. From my understanding, the school DID put a new security system into place, and did emergency drills.

What more could they have done to safe-guard the children?

And as said above - if a settlement is given...the school doesn't print money. It'll come from taxpayer money. We, the people.

You don't think schools should have armed guards, metal detectors, barbed wire fence, armored vehicles, roving foot patrols, gun turrets, a quick reaction force, tiers of radiation detection equipment at a 1, 3, 6 and 10 mile radius, under ground defensive tunnel networks, surface to air missile batteries and teachers need to be cleared by Homeland Security... because [some thing] is possible and its the schools responsibility to prevent it?

So you think every kid that was not killed should get a 100 million dollars? How much should the families who actually lost a child get paid then?

it's not like it would even be hard to pop a guard or 2 on the way in... it's not like these guards would be trained, in full gear, machine guns, fingers on the trigger, etc... more likely than not, it would just be some half-asleep rent-a-cop who hasn't fired a gun in his life...

I meant if they were to sue the gun manufacturers in the state of ct and if they won. It changes the gun business because then there would be precedent of gun manufactures held liable for the product they produce.

That's what my kid's school is doing.

It's also what this school did in CT - it required people to "show ID". That didn't seem to work well.

What are you saying - that I need to arm my 12 year old when she goes to school so she can protect herself?

I don't think that will happen. Our schools are laying off teachers and our local police departments here in CA are laying off offices - my town lost half of it's officers in the past five years. The schools can't afford it. There are 12 schools in my town here, and that's only a part of a school district. It would take dozens and dozens of officers to protect everything.

Our local police department, however, has announced they will do their best to keep officers near schools when they can. I think this is a great.

I agree - the school here had no chance. They tried to install a security system, practiced drills, and in the end it didn't help all that much.

I think their "security system" was lame. They required people to walk up to a locked door and show ID? I guess it never occurred to them that any gun man who wanted in would just blast their way in.

And what about malls and movie theaters? Some schools don't even have locked doors.
