No more Presidential Term Limits

http://twitchy.com/2013/01/05/rep-jo...al-term-limit/

We?re still a couple of weeks from the inauguration, but Rep. Jose Serrano (D-N.Y.) is already looking forward to 2016 and beyond. The congressman yesterday reintroduced a bill to repeal the 22nd amendment establishing term limits for the president.

The best thing for the country would be to amend the amendment down to ONE term and then make it the same for Representatives and Senators.

Don't let any of them stay in Washington more than one term.

Right on. I'm so sick of seeing career politicians. It shouldn't be a career choice.

I'm curious if he felt the same way in 2003.

I think a 12 year limit would be more reasonable.

We need them to have some experience and continuity to pass on to the incoming freshmen because if they were all new, nobody would know how to accomplish anything and nothing would get done unless forced by extreme influences which are mostly to the detriment of the average citizen.

But, I agree that public service should be a service and not a career.

Or at the very least make it so the two terms cannot be consecutive. That way a President's first term isn't so focused on the re-election, but more on leaving a legacy that would lend itself to another term down the road.

I did a little digging into this.
This same guy has brought this same legislation to the floor every two years like clock work since at least 1997. I didn't dig any further back.
So it's not an Obama thing it's a Hispanic Representative that wants a dictatorship.
Introduced in 97, 99, 01, 03, 05, 07, 09, 11, and 2013

8 years is too short. 12 or 16 is more like it. I wish Clinton was able to stay in office longer.

Representatives have a 2 year term Senators a 6 year and Presidents 4

I would think a consolidation to 4 years for everyone would be sufficient.

Yep, a 4 year term...and that's it. Go home.

As it is now...they are CONSTANTLY running for re-election and afraid to do anything that would actually help the country because they are scared of getting voted out.

George Washington served ONE term and went home. He said he had no desire to be a King.

That's the way it should be.

The House of Representatives is the worst of the bunch. They just got elected...and now they are already laying down the groundwork for their campaigns in 2014 (for 2015).
It's ridiculous.

Give them all 4 years...and send them back home to find a damn job.

I understand the sentiment, but really..do you want a bunch of one-and-done noobs representing the country?

I'm on record as saying that 98%-99% of our elected office holders are corrupt shills, but one-and-done noobs isn't the answer either.

IMO, the best first step is getting the Citizens United ruling overturned. If you don't know what that is, please look it up. It officially changed our form of government from a constitutional republic to a plutocracy.

I think the solution is to be able to remove them easier.. not by just waiting 4 years for a new election. People have to have experience to be effective. I think they should remain in power as long as they are doing a great job - more like any company. And remain there knowing they can be shown the door at any time. No business can function by cycling in a new executives crew every few years and then keep the business on track for the long term.

What makes those clowns any better at running things than any other citizen?
Obviously NOTHING...look at what they've done so far.

We are all supposed to serve in govt at some point in our lives. But right now...those federal spots are being held by career politician/millionaire lawyers posing as Senators and Congressmen.

I don't think that what they do is rocket science. You and I could get in there with a staff and work with their transition team and be plenty up to speed to be able to cast our votes in the Senate or House.
Serve 4 years, then transition the next person in and GO HOME.

That was the way it was meant to be. Not the way it is now.

Can you show me (ie. links) where the founding fathers intended for it to be this way? Serve one term and you're gone. If that's the case, Washington, Jefferson and Madison all missed or ignored the memo.

If you can't (which i don't think you can), you're really saying this is your opinion of how things SHOULD be. That's ok, just be straight about it.

This makes no sense. I understands politicians with more then 1 term have too much power, but at the same time. In many cases it is difficult for anyone to get something done in 1 term. I by no means accept the job Obama is doing, but at the same time, how do you fix what Bush did in 4 years? That time went by in the snap of a finger.

Everything took a shit in the last couple of months of his last term because of laws signed in the 90's.

Why is it people don't happen to remember how that shit ACTUALLY went down?

And Obama got Obamacare done in 2 years. 1/2 of a term. I'd say that's plenty to get done in a term.

Wow! Your comment is so comically ignorant, I don't even know where to begin.

Let me guess, you get almost all of your (alleged) info from right wing sources?

And before you think i'm partisan, see sig.

Insert Charlie Brown teacher voice here...

I lost my business and damn near my house because of what happened in the US economy.

I know damn well what happened and when. For you to spout your condescending remarks like usual does nothing to add to this discussion.

I'm sorry for what happened to you. Sincerely. Soooo many innocent people got fucked in that catastrophe.

but for you to make comments like "Everything took a shit in the last couple of months of his last term because of laws signed in the 90's.", shows you really don't know the whole story.

For a starting point, I recommend you watch the documentary Inside Job. Once you do, you won't be blaming one political party or another for what happened. You'll be thoroughly pissed at both for what's happened over the last 30+ years.

It all happened on a level above politics. Please watch it.

I tend to agree. Without the pressure of reelection, they're less likely to give in to bribes - BUT that wouldn't stop them from fucking us over in exchange for cushy industry jobs when they get out - so that would have to be addressed.

This is exactly how it works right now. It's called the Revolving Door. Look it up.

Term limits won't change this. Taking the money out of politics, starting with the repeal of Citizen's United, is pretty much our only hope.

I know I'm dreaming saying this, but it's da troof.

I will take time to watch that.
But you're assuming I'm blaming a political party.
I don't . I blame the fucking idiots that had any part of the housing bubble.
The politicians, bankers, mortgage brokers, people buying houses just because they thought they could, etc etc.
Lots and lots of ignorance and greed caused what happened in my opinion.
Sadly our country is still paying for that ignorance today.

It's only difficult because they spend their first term trying to get re-elected for their second term.

There is a reason we have term limits on being president. Shame we don't have them on congress. They are needed desperately.

Any idiot who thinks the president should have longer term limits, well, GTFO of the US you socialist/commie bastard. There is a reason we don't allow it for over 8yrs.

yeah, after FDR was elected 4 times in a row...Congress decided that the Pres. needed term limits...but they, of course did not.

Funny how that worked. lol
