Max Mind is busting my balls
the maker of the geo lite database, Max Mind (word split on purpose) is busting my balls, without a legal foothold imo...
Their free city database is distributed based on the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License, which means if you make use their database on ANY page, you must credit them with their attribution link (see dev.maxmind.com/geoip/geolite ). I've done that since day 1 using geoplugin, a webmaster API for querying this db. Now they have told me I have to make sure every one of my users is abiding by this. WTF?! Firstly, I don't require anyone to signup to use geoplugin, and second those that did bother total nearly 8k webmasters. I don't require they register their domains, so impossible to verify they are displaying the link back to max mind. imo, they can ![]() So, many of you use their free db - do you provide their attribution link backs??

I don't think you should expect that much for free. It isn't that costly to buy access, then you won't have any issues.

Fuck them, I'm actually using your service in a project I'm building, I'll link back to you, not them.

Not really the point of the thread... They are saying i should verify my users are abiding by the accredition. Though nothing in that very vague license says I have to.
