It's Here ? Handgun Game Changer !!!
Wiki Weapons Fires First 100% 3D-Printed Handgun ? This sure alters future gun availability debates.
* Defense Distributed's Wiki-Weapons project fired the "Liberator," its .380 handgun that was created completely with a 3D printer. * The 15 of the 16 parts created using the technology took just 24 hours to print. * The blueprint for the Liberator has been posted online, free for anyone to download. * Lawmakers have since renewed calls for bans on 3D printed firearms that could be undetectable by security sensors. The only part not printed was the firing pin which needs a harder material. http://news.yahoo.com/wiki-weapons-f...134626497.html . |

watching it on CNN right now. Scary thought that anyone can download and make it if they have a 3-D printer.

So basically only the bullet would trigger airport security? Or would the mass of plastic also set sensors off?

Been saying this for a year or more...
3D printing makes gun laws obsolete. The best thy can do s regulate ammunition. People can make gunpowder but it could be regulated like psticides and other substances Mechanical objects can all be printed |

Our priorities are all fucked up. Spend money on research to print guns while half the world as nothing to eat or drink.

3D printing in itself is a great thing. There was many times where I wanted to make something that would be too difficult to fabricate by hand (for instance some sort of blanking plate for something etc). However, when it comes to anyone now being able to print a gun (and of course both the models and printing technology will improve) I would be fucking scared to leave my house, let alone take any sort of public transportation or go anywhere like a mall. This can have far reaching consequences beyond crime.

I just saw this on CNN while I was eating lunch. Kind of scary. Eventually anyone will be able to create a firearm in their own home. When these printers become more advanced... It will be a game changer for sure.

Well, you can also build a gun by yourself without a 3D printer, so this "news" don't impress me at all. You don't have to be MacGyver to build weapons in your garage.

However if you do not, a printer enables you to make multiple exact copies of whatever it is that it can print (in this case almost any object - case in point - GUN). I love that you think this printer requires ink.

Probably easier..anyone with a bridgeport in their garage can building a very high quality fully automatic weapon. However, I just ordered makerbot 3-d printer and will try making the gun just to see how accurate it really is.

aren't 3d printers available outside the u.s.?
i think they are, seems to me this tech would be applicable to areas where it's difficult to obtain a gun, unlike in the usa, where guns are readily & cheaply available to most everyone. if a felon, etc, needs a gun, it's not a problem for them to get one or a dozen in the us. also, t-minus how long till we read about the first dimwit who prints a gun that blows up in his hand. |

You could get that equipment used far cheaper than what a 3d printer would cost that is good enough to print the gun parts. The 3d printer staples has likely isn't good enough. It looks very cheap to me and the build area doesn't look big enough for things like the AR lower these guys have already released.
Most seem to over look that the printer those guys are using cost them $8k and that was "used" off ebay. The el cheepo printers are just that cheap and many of them can't make the gun parts these guys already have files for. Meanwhile you can pick up some old used machine shop equipment that has out lived it's professional usage and build a AK or AR15 that can't be traced.. |

The 3D printing and distribution of design specs makes the issue a more interesting political debate about Government control vs. liberty and the rights of the people, particularly as it pertains to the internet, but the honest truth is you could make super cheap zip guns pretty much since there was such a thing as a hardware store.
