W-9 for a $100 bucks

Doing some contract work for a client and they want me to fill out w-9 for $100 bucks.

I think as a contractor, you always have to fill out w-9 if doing work for a company, Is that correct or is there a certain amount you need to exceed before its necessary.

If you aren't their employee during the year, Contract Labor has a $600 ceiling before paperwork is needed on their part.

So after $600 during the year is it 1099 or w-9.

Basically its just a small update pages job, but I am also rebuilding a site which is about $2500 worth of work.

Most companies are going to collect your info and have you fill out the W-9 form even if your initial gig or project is under $600. If you refuse, they may or may not do business with you at all. If you make over $600, at year end their accountant is supposed to send out the 1099 form.

If you are doing more than 600 in a year then they are correct and just following IRS regs.

If they pay you 100 and you fill out a w9 they can write it off but you dont have to claim it until you hit 600 from the 1 company.

I think the company can write it off whether or not the recipient fills out a w9 and the recipient is supposed to report it regardless of the amount.

Sounds like they are just being cautious. Nothing to worry about, but lying will get you into serious shit.

I got a 1099 year ago for $17

Companies are required to send out a 1099 if you earn $600 or more and in order to do so they need a w9 from you. Some wait to request it of you once they have paid you at least $600 others ask for it upfront just in case they end up paying you $600 or more by years end.

We want a W-9 to cover our ass if we are audited that we actually paid [the proverbial] you. Nothing more, nothing less.

w9's don't prove you paid anyone although you will of course need it for a 1099 which you might be referring to but even that is not proof as one could fill out whatever they wanted on there. In an audit they will ask to see a receipt for the services if available and most importantly proof of payment for the services.

Well if I'm gonna be doing more work for the company I might as well will out the w-9.

It just bugs the fuck out of me cause I am doing my friend a favor and rebuilding their whole site with wordpress and prestashop and includes hours of hacks and custom plugins. I told him I would cut him a huge deal because the company is in start up phase and really can't afford to pay full rates so I was gonna try and keep it "on the under rates". Well fuck that then if they want to get all technical then I'm charging full development and consulting fees.

Tell him $100 for the site and a $501 administration fee to fill out the form which brings the total to $601 as you don't wanna fill out the form unless it's needed or over $600.
