OK I been at this for 20 yrs I have shot magazine layouts, boxcovers, vhs, dvd and hd

Heres where it makes a difference

In studio either one is a great choice

In a harsh environment (desert, rain, snow, sand, salt air) Nikon all the way. There is a reason that photojournalists the world over have sworn by Nikon for decades and that reason is they are workhorses.

I did a shoot in the desert in red rock canyon we had a nikon D-100 and the equivalent canon...the canon got sand in it from the wind within an hour and quit working...the Nikon still works to this day.

Thats the real reason to go Nikon....

Crazy, my friend lives by canon. Was going to switch to nikon but decided not to because she says cannon is the best. I think it all has to do with lighting& the person behind the camera.

I use canon its a tool, once you buy your first camera you are married to the lens system. If you plan on having some nice lens. And Mike the canon pro dslrs are all sealed so no sand in them.

i have the d600,, the d610 is the same with a bit faster burst mode and some slight changes to the wb.

fantastic camera.

haven't found any zooms i like with it but i do have 2 of the 1.8 series lenses, 28 and 85 and they are spectacular with the d600 body. the 60mm micro does very very well with this body too!

I had a chance to see all 3 marks of the camera but different types and for me sony is no way, from the experience i had i bought a nikon camera for my self and im very satisfied with it. As for the image quality i really cant say there is much of the difference between nikon and canon if you do in setup environment (if you plan your shooting) but in action and no planning scenes a tiny bit of better dynamic range for nikon gets my vote. in the other hand Canon has a greater community and their famous magic lantern which gives him points. As for the quality both feels firm and built of good materials just a nikon looks better sealed while canons are a bit squeaky.

In the end very much depends of personal choice, budget and camera needs. I would go with nikon again, and quality also depends of lens not only camera.

How come canon engineers can not overcome this obvious (as you imply) disadvantage and make their cameras as good in those environments?

I don't use them in extreme environments, but I've never had any problems with Canon DSLRs. Of course, the photographer, lighting and his or her business acumen matter a lot more than equipment.

I can speak on this with some authority because I have and regularly use both systems.

Both Nikon and Canon each have their advantages. I shoot all my stills on a Nikon D800 but I shoot most of my video on the Canon 5D MIII. I use only Nikon and Zeiss lenses for both however. I don't use Canon glass at all. I much prefer the Nikon glass.

For the average consumer either will work great and take amazing pictures. It really only comes down to ergonomics. For pretty much everyone on GFY (except for the half dozen high end pros) either camera would be a great choice.

Canon had the greater market share and always will. They are a much bigger company than Nikon. Nikon only makes cameras and lenses (and scopes, binoculars etc).

If I had to choose though personally just one camera it would be Nikon

Nikon myself, although I have used Fuji, and canon in the past. Fuji when I went digital in 2001 with Nikon glass.... used canon for about 6 months with canon glass in 2009. oddly enough my personal experience is Nikon files take more aggressive post than canon files... only heard good things about canon glass though ... right now my d3x is going insane .. been to the shop twice... burning the skin tones and dropping the ambient ... my personal opinion is blue channel on the chip is going out... back to the shop on Monday

Jay time to go 4k and dump the dlsr video...

And this is it. The cost of the lenses far outweigh the body. And always go full frame om the word go. I spent a fortune in lenses on the best semi-pro xxxxxxx body only to realise 3yrs down the line the full frame body was what I needed. Took me another 2 years to have the guts to sell all and go full frame. I still don't have the equivalent lenses for full frame that I had, but I'll get there bit by bit. In any case the lenses held their value when I sold them, the body didn't (which is normal).
Btw, I don't shoot content.

They also make some kick ass microscopes and their ms optics put their camera lenses to shame
However, Zeiss kicks Nikon's ass in the microscope optics game

FYI: Nikon is part of the Mitsubishi Group which also includes

Kirin Brewery Co., Ltd.
Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Company
Mitsubishi Corporation
Asahi Glass Co.

In the early 2000s, after the merger of several companies, the Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma group came to include the former Green Cross Corporation.

As of 2007, Mitsubishi Corporation, a member of the Mitsubishi Group, is Japan's largest general trading company (sogo shosha) with over 200 bases of operations in approximately 80 countries worldwide. Together with its over 500 group companies, Mitsubishi employs a multinational workforce of approximately 54,000 people.

Mitsubishi Motors reached 1.3 million cars of total production in 2007.

In January 2013, Mitsubishi announced it would be launching a takeover bid for the Japanese meat processor Yonekyu Corp in a deal worth $197 million.[9]

Actually Nikon is its own company. It is not a subsidiary of any other company. (like Mitsubishi) It does however have dozes of its own specialist subsidiaries - all relating to optics afaik. The Mitsubishi group is simply a group of companies that work together to share resources. Mitsubishi has no control over Nikon, which is autonomous.

Canon on the other hand ...

Yes the class structure and the business structure are very different there then they are from the states. I spent a bit of time in Hong Kong too and it was crazy how different things worked there!

It all depends on the versions you buy.. Funny I see almost all but a couple Nikon guys leave the football field when it is raining. A Pro Canon and L series lens is sealed, so the sand story wouldn't hold up. I use mine from wildlife to studio.

The Nikon D800 is Amazing quality in Studio.

The Canon 5D MkIII almost the same quality in Studio
the Canon 1Dx is so fucking fast and the ISO settings are stupid with low noise.
I can shoot on the new football fields After Dark at 7,000 - 10K ISO wil low noise. Easily taken care of in Light Room.

Now with all that. My 5D Mk3 does suffer from the "soft" photos syndrome in outside or mixed light settings
Can't wait for a recall and get that fixed like they did the 1Dx

Some people still like to use Crop in Sports as it adds to the length of the glass.. Ehh

Always have More than one lens and more than One Body for different things...

I like my little Black Magic Pocket Cinema camera. Thinking of dumping my Sony Fs100 and getting the 4k Black Magic on e they actually have enough of them available for shipping.

I love the BMPCC but it has its limitations. Thinking about the 4k as well. Black Magic does not have a good track record on its releases though and there are several bugs that need to be worked out before I shell out for the 4k.

I love the BMPCC but it has its limitations. Thinking about the 4k as well. Black Magic does not have a good track record on its releases though and there are several bugs that need to be worked out before I shell out for the 4k.
The pocket has been good so far. My buddy has had his 2.5k model for less than two weeks and just had to box it up today so that it could go back tomorrow and be fixed. This is after waiting months for it to arrive in the first place.

I will likely be holding off a bit, as well. I really like the FS100 and could see myself springing for the FS700, or whatever Sony has coming next.
