Ontario raises Min Wage to $11.00/hr

Discuss....

TORONTO -- Anti-poverty activists say hiking Ontario's minimum wage to $11 an hour effective June 1 will still leave workers living in poverty, while convenience stores say it shouldn't result in higher prices.

Premier Kathleen Wynne announced the 75-cent-an-hour increase, the first change since the Liberal government froze the wage at $10.25 an hour four years ago.
Sonia Singh of the Workers' Action Centre says the minimum wage needs to be increased to $14 an hour to give workers enough to live on.

I think minimum wage needs to be set low so that someone makes the bare minimum to support themselves for a short period of time. When I say "bare minimum" I mean it should support one person renting a room in an apartment and food and not much else; No smart phone or Ipads etc.

Minimum wage shouldn't be a way of life, it should be motivation to do better.

I remember living on minimum wage when I was a kid fresh out of the military - flipping burgers for $3.50 / hour. Because I couldn't afford the lifestyle I wanted, I worked four jobs to make ends meet.... Until I was able to climb out of that minimum wage rut.

EXACTLY CORRECT!!!! Spot On! I worked 2 to 3 jobs depending on what I wanted in Life.

Most Make WAY above Min wage, if they have a Family.

I know a female that makes $14K-$15k, has 2 Children, and
gets 100% of her Federal and State Taxes Back, PLUS
Federal tax she received additional to what she paid in
Federal she got $5,300
Child tax Credit $2,000
State she got $800 above everything she paid in.

YES, I know this is Tax payer money, but She IS making more than $10-12 an HOUR.
Plus the Money Made is TAX Free all year.
She also gets an Energy Credit Cash payment between $400-$1,200 a year depending on how high her bill is. (Once a year payment)
She also gets $400-$650 a Month food stamps (again depending on how many hours she worked.)
She goes to the Free Food Places, and Churches to get her food, and sells her Food Stamps for Cash.

She also gets $400 a month Child support.
She also lives with her Boy Friend who has a Construction job, so he normally brings home a Nice pay check also.

So, to Bryan G, Quit Crying the people who seek things out, can Work the System Very Well.

When I got out of the military I wasn't qualified to do anything really. When I look back it... It was insane. My average day was a early morning newspaper route, 6am to 3pm at a cafe, 4pm till 8pm at a fast food restaurant, and then 9pm till 1am at Target stocking shelves. It was fucking brutal - I had little time for sleep no less a social life.

And when I finally found that job that took me out of that rut I took it - although I still worked the fast food restaurant for a long time after.

And eventually that "good job" wasn't enough and I wanted more, I wanted a carreer... So I put myself through college.

This is what minimum wage is for - to "barely" keep you on your feet until you can do better.

This from the same genius government that has made it so much more expensive to live and do business in Ontario; the same government that is driving manufacturing from the province; the same government that has basically bankrupted the province and turned it from a "have" to a "have not" province.

Sounds like a great plan. Not!

This is nothing but a cynical vote-buying scheme before an election this year.

More businesses with less money is not good for business. Many businesses that are just breaking even now will be be forced to reduce staff and hours or may even close altogether.

so the answer is slaves?

or people being paid so little, they may as well be slaves?

all to 'save your many businesses that are unable to operate by paying a living wage'?

No. A slave is someone who is forced against their will to perform labour for $0 an hour and who is not free to go seek a higher wage elsewhere.

Go ahead and drive small businesses out of business. Where will the unemployed get their living wage then?

you can blame the egg and the milk costs on the dairy groups controlling price though i only pay 3.97 for a three bagger of milk.

great. now those small business owners trying to pay for their bank loans off the backs of their menial workers now can complain about the same problem working for big corporations, who manage to pay such wages and not go out of business

No, I'm talking about the phrase "living wage" and it's incorrect association with entry level unskilled workers.

If you really want to shock the Americans reading this you should quote them the price of beer here.

As an example for comparison:

Budweiser 30 Can 355 ml - $49.95

The same case can be had for around $25 after tax and deposit in the US.

I know beer isn't a basic necessity, but still.

Listen Karl. Small and medium sized businesses make up 98% of all business establishments in Ontario and they employ half of the total workforce. If you insist on killing them off with all of your class-warfare BS then you do so at your own peril. Someone will have to pick up the slack somewhere. The policies you obviously condone already have us on an accelerating downward spiral with no end in sight. Enjoy the decline.

am i? with your logic, we should just do away with a minimum wage

pay them $1 per hour.. til they're 'experienced'

i hear there is now university graduates working for free, in order to 'get the experience they require' to get a job that 'pays them enough for basic amenities'

but, you're most likely right, and i am missing the point. We have an economy that was leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else as of 30 years ago.. i am sure it's even bigger since we have had such a head start

right?

a .70 wage increase will kill off 98% of your business?

sounds like a simple inflation jump would have killed off that business, if so.

Yep same for me. First job was for 3:15 an hour. Working in a Chicken place. Second job was at a Private country club making 5$ and hour shining shoes.

US is what? half of that? Doesn't sound like a lot but these are just basic necessities here.
That's not why prices are the way they are here.

Wait a minute! Are you telling me that it's cold as fuck AND beer is almost 2 dollars a CAN?! (Nobody can make the import argument, I buy imported beer for $1-1.50 a bottle.)

No wonder you guys don't have an illegal American immigrant population. Even without free health care, it's still better here! We have cheap beer for our ailments!

Until you own your own business and actually have "entry level" workers you won't realize most aren't even worth the current minimum wage.

Until you actually employ "entry level" workers everything you post is just unproven theory.

Good afternoon.

we wish man.

the story was 'the dollar is not at par, and transportation costs'

but then the dollar went to par, and that meant 'transportation costs were higher, ergo the prices not changing'

Since you can't even get the shittiest of apartments in Toronto for under $1500 a month I can see where they'd want the minimum wage to go to $11. Here in the 'Peg you'd get a plush 2 bdrm highrise with a pool, spa and excersise facility for $1500/mo. And underground parking.

Not even sure what the minimum wage is here but it's no $11.

By the way, a one dollar an hour raise is not a one dollar an hour raise. I can't believe nobody mentioned this. It comes with a nice little stack of additional taxes as well.

One dollar to the employee is never one dollar to the employer.

Exactly. Add on CPP, EI, WSIB.

Also, another not already mentioned fact is that in Ontario right now there are two minimum wages: $9.60 for under 18, $10.25 for over 18.

So if both are now going to be $11 (I have yet to hear otherwise) that is an increase of $1.40 for employees under 18. High school kids flipping burgers while living with their parents are going to make out like bandits.

sounds like a simple inflation jump would have killed off that business, if so.
No, the $0.75 increase won't do it on it's own. But small businesses are suffering death from 1000 cuts. The same mentality that leads to these knee-jerk minimum wage increases leads to other policies that are just as damaging to small business. There is a reason why youth unemployment is 20%+ in Ontario.

The price of electricity in Ontario has gone up by 50% in the last decade and is set to rise another 50% in the next 5 years. Ontario now has the most expensive electricity in North America. This is because of the same brain-dead simpletons introducing this new minimum wage.

And because the minimum wage will now be tied to inflation it will lead to more inflation, which leads to higher minimum wage, which leads to higher inflation....etc., etc.

What's interesting to me about these discussions is perspective.

In this particular discussion, we have two different perspectives. That of an employee and that of an employer. The two sides go back and forth, fighting this point, arguing that point. But the funny thing is only one of those sides has experience from both perspectives.

An employer was at one time an employee, and often a minimum wage employee. Whereas an employee was very rarely an employer.

One side, dual experience. One side, solo experience.

Something to think about.

i thought the price of electricity had gone up so much, because you guys deregulated and sold out to Direct Energy?

who should be, at this very moment, raping a lot of customers, specifically the elderly who don't have the energy to find out why their bills are being 'renewed' and signed up for the same services twice, on 'different payment plans'

That's right, or better match our beer prices, which is like $1.20 - $2 on tap and $ 0.60 - $ 1 a bottle.

No wonder this country consumes the most beer per capita in the world!

No that's not it. It's now mostly because of the Green Energy Act.

beer is cheaper in quebec. ontario and some other provinces have retarded taxes on alcohol and only allow beer to be sold in their own beer stores. in quebec you actually have competition and gasp..sales.
