There is no way on planet earth Iraq was allowing any US forces to stay there. None, not with Irans puppet Maliki pulling the strings. Duh.

there is also no evidence at all that a modest troop presence would have prevented or curtailed the invasion is ISIS. The anbar sunnis were never allies of the US even during the awakening. Once Maliki turned on them, it was game over for any US interests. Duh again.

I don't know. Democrats have always talked about peace. But historically they have been big warmongers themselves.

Pannetta sounds like a guy who is disillusioned. And disillusioned people are usually a little bitter too.

He's spent his career believing in one political party and defending it in the arena of ideas. And then he ends up at this point in life finding that maybe he was wrong about it.
