I am deep frying a turkey this weekend

Doing a Thanksgiving test drive. Have never done fried turkey before. I bought an indoor electric* one, it's pretty cool: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Any advice? Who wants some?

* I did not preorder this.

My advice (based on having done it several times) DO NOT do it indoors even if it says it is for indoors.

Easy to have an accident and better to have 25ft high flames outside the house then inside.

On a related note, I have a nice Ribeye roast and half a brisket in the grill smoking right now.

Local market here over ordered on turkey breast a while ago and I have been getting them for $1.28 a pound. I have smoked 4 of them across the past month or so and have 2 in the freezer.

Found out this morning that HyVee is going to have them for .99 a pound over the weekend. Think I am going to be stocking up on turkey breast.

If you lean over when lowerin' the frozen bird in - you won't need a shave or haircut for awhile.

(sorry, laughed at too many deep fried frozen turkey vids on YT over the years)

$150 for the appliance... another $50 in oil... 2 hours to do it, another 2 hours to clean it up afterwards... reasonably high risk of something going wrong and setting your house on fire...

seems like high cost, lot of drama and pretty limited fun to cook "up to 20lbs"?

Do not put the turkey in if it is frozen..lol Also use a paper towel to dry off any water on the turkey before putting it in.

I would do it outside also

My advice is to do it outside and if you choose to do it inside...pay close attention to details in the instructions booklet that came with the cooker and make sure you have a fire extinguisher at hand.

Just to make things interesting should you choose to cook it inside, leave an empty can of starter fluid, some needles and packets of sudafed strewn about for the firemen to find.

In our town, that'd barely get two paragraphs on pg. 19 of the local paper.

last time i was at my big bro's for turkey day he deep fried 2 of them. i was uber skeptical but they were amazeballs. i didn't watch too closely when he did it but he injected them with a marinade or something. one was kind of smokey with a hint of teriyaki and one was garlic herb. soooo good and the frying sealed in the juices. best of luck and be very careful. lots of good advice in this thread.

I was thinking more along the lines of getting local restaurant to make one for you for a $100... nothing wrong with cooking stuff yourself, but with turkey, something most people really eat only once a year, it just seems like a bad idea to buy a special cooker and deal with all the drama involved so you can cook it yourself...

Here I am The deep fried turkeys are the best ! Its done in about a 1/2 an hour, apx 12 lbs , 3 mins per pound. I do it outdoors, would never consider doing it inside. I have been doing it for years, would never go back to baking it in the oven again

who the fuck spends 50$ on oil? that is enough for 5 lifetimes. Who is cleaning your house? if they take 2 hours to clean a single appliance you need to fire them immediately. If it's you, then you need to fire yourself and hire someone to do it for you ;)

I was probably exaggerating a bit, but that thing does use a lot of oil, you will pay close to the $50 estimate for some decent quality oil... it becomes useless after you cook it.. have to get rid of it... can't really just pour it down the drain, so have to pour it back into the bottles (likely make a mess while doing that)... throwing out gallons of usable oil into the trash kinda has bad vibe to it too, so ideally have to take it to some recycling place... then have to clean the cooker.... anything oily/greasy is a pain to clean, with some luck you can take it apart, but if not, you are kinda fucked, no clue how you would even clean a huge box like that...

though to be fair, I am exaggerating a bit, but it does seem like more drama to me than fun...

The oil you use to fry a turkey is pretty expensive if i remember correctly.
I haven't fried a turkey for a couple years. I think it was about 40 bucks to get the oil.

The oil can be reused and the appliance can be used for much more than turkeys. You guys should click the link and read, you might like one for yourself.

oil reused for what? to make turkey flavored fries? to fry turkey flavored chicken? once used for turkey, the oil will have turkey taste to it... I guess I just must not "get it"...

what do you think restaurants do with their fryers exactly? Unless your cooking fish it wont matter.

I've always only had baked Turkey, which is delicious of course. For the first time ever last year though I tried whole-fried Turkey and it was amazing. He fried it outside even though it was December 25th.

Anyone here ever done the "Trash Can Turkey"? Always wanted to do one but generally when it's turkey season here.. we always have cold and wind. Wondered if the effort was worth it.

its not about saving money, saving time, etc
its a sense of accomplishment making something yourself... which generally turns out a lot better then some store bought bird

I'll spend a whole day cooking a thanksgiving dinner because I like to do it. Of course just going to Taco Bell for a turkey taco would be cheaper and easier, but fuck that

We use canola oil, it has a high ignition point. I takes apx 12 liters to fill the pot. A 5 liter jug of canola oil cost $6.50 @ Costco. Properly stored, it can be re used. When we discard it , we give it to a guy who filters it and uses it as fuel for his car, so I'm told.
