A few weeks ago, there was an extensive debate which occurred online over black men being falsely accused of crime, particularly rape. Some are under the mistaken impression that the number of false accusations are so low that they are not worth mentioning without the risk of insulting those who make legitimate allegations. Clearly, those who are inclined to believe such a thing are a) not familiar with the large numbers of black men who are in prison for crimes they did not commit and b) have never endured the stigma, trauma and humiliation of being falsely accused themselves. So, to dig into this issue, I reached out to a real criminologist who understands these issues better than the rest of us. She doesn?t rely solely on emotion to make her point, but has actually spent years studying these issues. She isn?t using talking points for a political agenda to promote bogus scientific research, but has instead spent many years immersed in rigorous academic literature on this important topic. Dr. Chenelle Jones at Ohio Dominican University, in the context of this interview about the Central Park 5, says that there is a study (among others) which argues that a very large percentage of the black men who are falsely accused of rape in America are accused by white women. I didn?t specifically ask Dr. Jones about rape, but it was a relevant topic, since the Central Park 5 consisted of five black and Latino teenagers who were falsely accused of raping a wealthy white woman. |

A Woman's False Accusation Pains Many Blacks - New York Times
It just goes to show that racism is alive and well and free in America," said Inez Chappell, a 67-year-old retired manicurist in Baltimore who grew up on stories of the Scottsboro Boys, the 1930's case of nine black teen-agers falsely accused of raping two white women. On a street corner in Harlem, not far from where countless rallies for the Scottsboro Boys were held, Michael Major, a 29-year-old security guard, said it made him sad that desperate people think blaming blacks will solve their problems. "It's kind of upsetting after a while," he said, "and it gets to be very stressful." Experts say the lies the 23-year-old mother told to cover her trail fit a long history of scapegoating black men for the ills of the nation. "This case demonstrates once again the stereotypical view of black men in America, that they are other, that they are dangerous, that they should be imprisoned," said Aldon Morris, who is black and the head of the sociology department at Northwestern University. "And this view, of course, is nothing new," he said. "It was the same view that guided lynch mobs during the days of segregation in the South. It is the same view that causes black men to be stopped, searched and harassed on a routine basis by the police." But the voices bemoaning the power of racial lies do not belong only to blacks. |

![]() Freedom After 30 Years on Death Row - The Atlantic A 1984 photograph of Louisiana death row inmate Glenn Ford, who may soon be exonerated (James R. McClure/Caddo Parish Indigent Defender Office) UPDATE: Glenn Ford was indeed released from prison late Tuesday afternoon local time. The same judge who denied him relief in 2009 was the one who signed the order authorizing his release. ORIGINAL STORY: Glenn Ford, a black man wrongfully convicted of murder by an all-white jury in Louisiana in 1984, a man who has spent the last 30 years on death row for a crime he did not commit following a trial filled with constitutional violations, is on the verge of being set free. Once that happens (and it could happen as soon as tomorrow after a hearing in the case) he will become one of the longest-serving death row inmates in modern American history to be exonerated and released. Ford's dogged lawyers and enlightened parish prosecutors in Shreveport both filed motions late last week informing a state trial judge that the time has come now to vacate Ford's murder conviction and death sentence. Why? Because prosecutors now say that they learned, late last year, of "credible evidence" that Ford "was neither present at, nor a participant in, the robbery and murder" of the victim in his case, a man named Isadore Rozeman. Justice finally will come to this man not from judges sworn to protect his rights but from the very prosecutor's office that put him away in the first place. Prosecutors believe the recent account of a confidential informant who claims that one of other four original co-defendants in the case, arrested long ago along with Ford, was actually the person who shot and killed Rozeman. This is not news to Ford. For three decades, stuck in inhumane conditions on death row in the state's notorious Angola prison, he has insisted that he had nothing to do with the murder and that he was involved in the case only after the fact. Any exoneration is remarkable, of course. Any act of justice after decades of injustice is laudable. It is never too late to put to right a wrong. But what also is striking about this case is how weak it always was, how frequently Ford's constitutional rights were denied, and yet how determined Louisiana's judges were over decades to defend an indefensible result. Isadore Rozeman, an elderly white man with cataracts, a man fearful of crime in his neighborhood, was murdered in his small jewelry and watch repair shop in Shreveport on November 5, 1983. Ford had done yard work for Rozeman and several witnesses placed him near the scene of the crime on the day of the murder. When he learned that the police were looking for him he went to the police station where, for days, for months, he cooperated with the investigation. Ford told the police, for example, that a man he identified as "O.B." had given him jewelry hoping that he, Ford, could pawn it. The police would later discover that this jewelry was similar to merchandise taken from Rozeman's store. Ford identified one possible suspect in Rozeman's murder, a man named Jake Robinson, and later suggested that "O.B." was Robinson's brother, Henry, who also may also have been up to no good. With all signs pointing to the Robinsons, and with police under the impression that the one or both of the brothers still possessed the murder weapon, Ford was not immediately charged with Rozeman's murder. He and the two Robinsons were instead charged three months later?only after Jake Robinson's girlfriend, Marvella Brown, incriminated them by telling the police that Ford was with the Robinsons, and in the possession of a firearm, on the day of Rozeman's murder. It took that all-white jury less than three hours to recommend a sentence of death. |

That being said, the horrendously disproportionate amount of crime committed by America's black population isn't because of planted evidence and you know it. . |

Yes, planting evidence is a horrific breech of the trust the public should have for law enforcement. It's also a felony that should land the cops who break it in prison.
But you're smart enough to know this isn't the problem with the disproportionate amount of black involved crime and what it does to black communities and the US as a whole. The problem is much deeper. Posts like your's above do nothing but divert attention from the real underlining problems ... or is that your intention? . |

The issue I have has nothing to do with race, it is with police abuse and corruption. Its to bad everyone wants to turn this into a racial issue (both sides) but I could give a shit if someone is white, black, green or red, but the people who are willing to give cops unlimited power are a hell of a lot scarier to me than any criminal. |

Oh, those nagging little details. The medical examiners report states that Garner died of compression to his neck and that compression to his chest probably also contributed to his ultimate death. It is a homicide, like it or not. In short, the cops did, as a matter of medical fact, kill him. He did not have some unrelated heart issue at some time later that same day (as some seem to want others to think for whatever their own reasons are.) This info is public, not disputed, and super easy to find.
Also brush up on the fact that his own wife does NOT believe that race had anything to do with the entire thing. As she said, Garner and the cops knew each other well. Cops would call him "cigarette man" and who knows what Garner called them. He's too dead to answer for himself at the moment. There are some who just want to beat the drum that all cop killings of civilians would cease immediately if black people, and apparently only black people, would just stop resisting arrest. Why is it that in a time when murder, robbery, rape are all down (by all races) that killings of civilians (of all races) by cops is up? Personally I would guess it's a culture of fear combined with militarization and training that requires that cops think of their work place as a war zone when it isn't. That data is also known to be under reported with nearly all agencies saying that nearly 100% of killings were justified even though they don't report them. Some related reading for the interested few: Hundreds of Police Killings Are Uncounted in Federal Statistics - WSJ
