Red Bull ice climb takes on frozen Niagara Falls

Knowing firsthand how unstable the ice conditions are at Niagara - I was expecting a different outcome to this.

Red Bull returned to Niagara Falls this week for a crashed ice event of a different sort.
Canadian ice climber Will Gadd was at the falls Tuesday, climbing a 54-metre jagged ice formation on the American side of the Horseshoe Falls.
U.S. officials were pretty tight-lipped about what was going on when first questioned by the media.
Representatives with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the Niagara Falls State Park did not return calls from Canadian media.

The New York State Parks Police told The Review the activity at the falls was "training."
Turns out, a crew on the U.S. side was filming Gadd as he ascended the cliff of ice.
Gadd, also known as Captain Adventure, is sponsored by Red Bull. The 47-year-old Alberta resident was recently named a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year.
"State Parks Police were on site earlier this week for safety and security for a Will Gadd Red Bull film project," a police spokesman said Wednesday.

Further media inquiries were directed to Niagara Falls State Park and Red Bull.

Damn I had no idea that Niagara Falls ever completely froze up - it happened twice just last year I read and here are some photos of the wondrous sight.

Only the American Falls freezes - the Horseshoe Falls never freezes (too much water flow).

Back in history when the river froze from shore to shore - they'd set up wooden shacks and sell shit to tourists from mid-river. Then one year the ice broke up unexpected and sent some people to their deaths in the rapids.

Poof - no more souvenir shacks on the river.

Some people just spoil it for others.

Very true.

We live 20 mins. away and go there often on a Fri/Sat night to watch the tourist freaks, but rarely bother lookin' at the falls any longer.

I probably have enough shots of Niagara Falls to fill a dozen coffeetable books by now.

My parents would take us on summer nights, this was way before the casino, I loved how tacky Clifton Hill was, the smell of the Falls mixed with the smell of white trash was intoxicating.

All there was back then was the Skylon Tower, Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum, Ripley's Museum, the souvenir shops and food joints. Oh, and the Fallsway Hotel had a miniature golf course, the only one I knew of in the Niagara area.

Driving around the residential streets, some beautiful Victorian homes I remember.

What I missed out on was the heyday of Crystal Beach, our family photos and 8mm movies have a lot of Crystal Beach in them, most of the people in them were dead by the time I came around.

Old school, for sure.

As a kid I still remember Clifton Hill from the same era - long before we eventually moved here. Funny you mention the 8mm movies - we still have some of the falls from back in the 50s/60s.

A lot has changed, obviously. They finally took out the train tracks from the top of Clifton Hill a few years ago. The Minolta Tower is completely lost in a cluster of highrises. The Skylon still stands apart, though. Even Tablerock is quite different these days with an arched walkway over the Parkway.

And Crystal Beach, yeah...I remember it back in its heyday. Just a bunch of sanitized condos now - although the pier is still there. The beach is smaller due to higher water levels in Lake Erie, though.
