Guide to selling used vehicles on Craigslist

I do a buttload of biz on CL in a number of areas. Hell I even still meet females on CL from time to time. But the one unfortunate area I have to deal with every once in a while is the used car section. If you ever want to sell a car on CL then here is a good guide for you to save you time, money and brain cells.

1. Make sure to list your car at least 25% over your bottom price. Even if the car is worth $20,000 and you list it for $17,000 you will likely have a difficult time selling it because half the people with thing something is wrong with it and the other half will insist on negotiating for a lower price regardless of how low you list it. I guess they just need to feel like they got the best deal or want to influence people with their negotiating skills.

2. Make sure to take a many pics of the exterior and interior in good lighting because if you just take a few pics you will be asked a gazillion times for more pics.

3. Don't be too honest. Just like with political candidates and the news media most people want to be lied to in order to feel good. So if it burns a quart of oil between oil changes then fib or spin it and say it "just needs to be topped off once between oil changes". I am clearly too honest and I pay the price. Never put things negative such as "it burns some oil" because you will fuck yourself.

4. Always go on the test drive. Always. I don't care if they are the whitest white people you have ever seen. These cunts will drive it like a race car if you are not with them.

5. If when they do get back from the test drive they start telling you all the negative shit they see with the car then just cut them off and say you need to go see another buyer unless they have the money you are asking for. I promise you these cunts are setting you up for a lowball offer. Don't waste your time.

6.Don't agree to meet anyone who has their "mechanic" or friend to check out the car. They will check every fucking god damn detail of the car. Cunts want a used car to be perfect and will point out tiny details that are ridiculous. Plus they spend an insane amount of time asking you questions and messing with the car.

7. Make sure the money they pay you is real cash with all the security features. And never accept a bank check unless you go to the bank together or verify it's validity some other way.

Always say you that you allowed for that in the price at every fault they point at. I wouldn't take anyone one a test drive unless they were committed as have no time for test drives. You don't have to buy it today do you? no that's great we have some time to spare now. If yes even better are. Well when do you need the car? Did you most wan't this model car? If you want to speed up the sale you will just have to agree to buy it pending on the test drive. If that springs up hostility just say feel free to look until your ready. I used to sell cars for a living and you don't need to give them a test drive to get commitment. You just want to hear a bunch of yes answers to your questioning. I recommend reading some of Tom Stuker's training if you want to learn how to sell cars he is the man and his course and book certainly help on what and not to say.

I can just imagine that somewhere there's a guide to buying cars on craigslist that says stuff like
"Take a mechanic friend and point out every negative thing on the car after the test drive, as it will help you get a lower price out of the seller"

I love Craigslist. I buy stuff all the time, mostly bikes. I low ball every one and when they say no I just say "Let me know if you change your mind". You would be stunned how many people will put a bike up at $800 and end up taking half of that a month later. I love the local college kids - eventually they all end up broke and having to raise cash quickly.

When selling, I am just the opposite. I am never in a hurry to sell anything. The price I put up there is the price you are going to pay. I am not going to haggle or negotiate.

3 times I have bought a Harley loaded and in perfect shape for less than half what the owner paid a few years earlier by being patient after a low-ball cash offer.

2 times I have resold the same bike a few years later for a grand or two more than I paid by having the bike in perfect condition and ignoring the low offers of others.

Patience and a stack of hundreds is the key to buying craigslist vehicles.

Patience and a very detailed vehicle is the key to selling on craigslist.

I disagree with the don't be too honest. I've had my used car dealers licence and I've sold a ton of cars via both CL & news paper classifieds. I've always made it a point to tell people everything I know about a car when selling it.

I agree with everything else though, but I've always had good luck just being honest with people. In all the cars I've sold I've only had one issue which was with a Class B RV and the woman whom bought it was in over her head and tried to use a bunch of BS mechanical claims from her brother's mechanic shop to back out of the deal.

One thing I'll add though is always stick to your guns on your low ball price. There are a lot of cheapskates out there and as long as you aren't selling a POS and are in the right ball park on the price it will eventually sell.

CL is a good place to sell cars. It generates as many leads as paid services like Auto Hebdo (Quebec Car selling mag).

Here's my advice:

If you want $30k for your car, ask for $32,500 so you have room when the client wants to negotiate.

Never accept Paypal, never sell it to anyone out of state via an "agent" or any of that crap. Cash or certified check only, and deliver the car only after the funds have cleared.

Avoid the idiots who say they are buying for a friend, or who are on oil rigs and can't travel, or who are overseas, and who just generally freak out because they can't believe what a great car you are selling and offer to pay you full price right now without even negotiation. They're scammers trying to scam you.

Good luck!

I have a good friend from Germany that I met when he came to the states to buy used Harleys. One year he was here looking for an economical pickup to take his wife and son on a tour of the US before shipping it back to Germany.

He found a truck on Recycler (or something like that) that sounded perfect; he called the owner and was told it was exactly what he sought so Willie drove out to check it out. When he got there he discovered that the truck had a rebuilt motor that had been really beefed up with a close ratio geared transmission. In other words there was nothing economical about this truck, it was a street racer.

Willie was a little upset, but did not show it, he just asked if he could take it for a quick drive to which the seller agreed. Willie got in, fired it up and proceeded to smoke the tires all the way down the street before bringing it back and telling him it wasn't what he was looking for.
