Braces as an adult?

Have any of you opted to get braces as an adult?

My teeth have never been really messed up, but I wanted to have absolutely flawless teeth so I got braces to fix them. Was self conscious about them for about a week, and then realized there is nothing embarrassing about bettering yourself for something that is so important.

Braces came off a week ago. Total time was under 1 year since my teeth weren't really that bad.. Could not have been happier with my decision.

Have any of you had braces as an adult, or considering them ?

Woo hoo! Congratulations! I have never had braces and have been blessed with straight teeth. I would definitely get invisiline if I needed them though.

Have you been smiling at everyone? Aren't you going to show off your new smile to us? Did you have to get them whitened too? I notice a lot of people have yellow teeth when they take braces off.

Getting my teeth whitened this week. Yellowing of the teeth is common with braces because it's hard to clean your teeth properly with them on.... also flossing is a pain in the ass.

My ortho suggested giving my teeth a rest before getting the whitened immediately after they came off, so I'm going in the next few days

I actually opted against invisalign. Invisalign is great, but treatment time is usually double the time of normal braces because they can't move teeth as effectively

Damon braces is what i went with.. more expensive than traditional braces and about the same price as invisalign, but they don't have the elastics that traditional braces have and are really effective

invisalign treatment estimate was 26 months
damon estimate was 12 months so I just roughed it out for the faster option

Braces, no.

I have the straightest, most perfect teeth.

In fact they're being cleaned in Polident on the nightstand right now.

Was it more difficult to eat 10 chicken breasts a day with braces on

not bad

I actually rarely eat chicken breast though, I took Choopas meal/workout plan and have just replaced chicken with other lean meats

I've also stuck to it since that thread

Great News and congrats on your decision! My teeth are all good, but my wife is thinking about this and had doubts if it's OK or too late in her age [34].

There is no such thing as "too late" when it comes to self improvement

It's like going to the gym when you're out of shape... What are people going to say? "look at that fat guy.. hes trying to get fit! what a loser!" ?

People don't care man

I guarantee you she will be happy she did it

She should consider Invisalign (depending on whether that's an option for her).
Second to none.

Get them pulled and get a set of shiny new teeth!

Maybe Hungarian Dentists were relatively inexpensive at one time, that no longer applies. I checked some prices, they were on par with Canada.

Isn't mexico real cheap? I remember being in TJ and there were some people there coming from San Diego to get their dental work done because it was so much cheaper.

Either way how much could it cost to get 12 teeth pulled and a full set? 8k?

Worth it!!!!

I was considering the type which are put behind your teeth, so they are not visible. Anyone have any feedback regarding those?
My issue is that I have one tooth that is not perfectly in place so I am reluctant to put braces on all my teeh when I need to fix just one.

- higher chance of the device causing a speech impediment (during treatment)
- less precise
- harder to clean
- more limited in terms of what types of imperfections it can fix

But I'm saying he just has to have all his teeth pulled. Not crowns. How much is a full set of false teeth? 2k? Could it cost 6k to pull 12 teeth? I have no idea.

Crowns and bridges are a whole other story.

Your best bet would be to speak with an ortho who can lead you in the right direction. That type of device may not even be compatible with what you're trying to accomplish.

Depends on the teeth and how difficult they are to pull...can be a couple hundred to a few hundred per tooth. My father in law does crowns, appliances, and implants (Implantology) and Fiance a dentist, both said dentures are pretty much outdated and not used often anymore. Glad I'll never have to use their services...30 years strong and not a single cavity!

My wife is an orthodontist, patients are mostly adults/late teens. For younger people it's trendy and they take the colorful elastics and shit. For older people they usually go with the white braces. The people that want the completely invisible ones or the ones that mount from the inner side are usually nuts and she usually tries to send them away elsewhere.

You're talking about incognito braces and I would advise against it. When I first went to my ortho I told him I wanted those. They were 10 grand compared to 7 grand for Damon braces but I didn't care and was convinced that having braces would be embarassing and incognito would be better.

Until he told me that it would make me slur like an idiot because my tongue would hit it every time I spoke. He also said treatment time would be longer because they can't move teeth as effectively. If he talked me out of it, even though it meant less money for him, Im glad I didn't get them. He pretty much said they were for people who are extremely insecure and couldn't bare having the more effective traditional braces

The incognito braces are shit because:
- They are VERY hard to work with
- They are very expensive
- Your teeth are straightened based on inserting a wire that "holds it's shape" so to speak and pulls your teeth into place. If this wire is on the inner side of your teeth it's far less effective.

As for the invisoline shit (the clear plastics you put over teeth), the ortodontist practically doesn't have to do anything because the things are computer-built for your teeth. You need to just switch out the clear plastics once in a while for the next one.

The only reason to take either of the above is if you are a celebrity or something and need it to be invisible, or if you are incredibly self-concious.

He talked you out of it because it's a pain in the ass for him to work with, and even if it costs more money the braces themselves are far more expensive. The actual material costs for a set of braces are like $50-70 unless you take the white ones.

Braces aren't just about straightening your teeth, they are also about aligning them properly so your jaw closes proeprly and you don't have underbite/overbite. You can have straight teeth and still need braces

For those of you considering braces but are embarassed

I suggest Damon braces

They are practically invisible, and even more effective than traditional braces because they don't use elastics on every bracket, so your teeth are free to move at all times to go into place

You can get metal brackets or plastic. What I did was have plastic clear ones on the top 6 and bottom 6 teeth, and then metal for the sides as you want them to be stronger there since you are chewing there and don't want to break them

Damon is a brand, These are just white self-ligating brackets. You can also get white wires but they tend to yellow by the time you get them changed...

Yeah I know, my point was that they were way better than traditional braces with elastics in terms of being hidden

Why nuts, because they prefer less visible to more visible? Not to mention there are work positions where it is almost no question that your only bet is invisible etc.

Your holy grail is Invisalign if the imperfection you have can be corrected with them (no way to know unless you consult a specialist).

If you're considering going down this route, be sure to consult with someone who specializes in Invisalign and not just someone who's heard of them or has had a couple of patients.

The biggest upside is that you can take them out whenever you want, eat as you normally would, clean your teeth as you normally would and the pain during treatment is negligible in most cases (compared to more traditional forms of correction)

I assume every time you take out you prolong the total treatment time?

great news mate. i haven't seen anyone with braces over the age of twelve in recent years I think many use invisalign and those comparable devices, but if i had a choice, i would spend one year w braces instead of 2-3 with invisalign.

Correct, it just gives you that extra flexibility and makes eating/brushing/flossing easier.

Downside: Drinking. Clear liquids only unless you take them out. (but at least it steers you towards healthier choices when it comes to hydrating...i.e. water)

For some perspective, my friend had straighter teeth than me before starting his treatment and he opted to go with invisalign

Looking at him before he started, it looked like he had perfect teeth, but there was a very slight overlap on a couple of his teeth he wanted to get fixed

we both started at the exact same time

Mine was done in less than 12 months, and his was supposed to be done around that time as well

He went back, and there was just 1 tooth that was still a bit crooked, so he has to wear invisalign for another 4-5 months

If he was on traditional braces, it could have been corrected in 1 month

That's why invisalign is usually best for people with very slight overcrowding type issues.. If you have any sort of problem that requires a bit more of teeth movement, your best best is traditional braces... In my opinion of course

Not good for me, Friday is my dark beer night
And I drink tea daily
And when you think that majority of people drink coffee or tea it makes it not a good choice for most of the people, should start with this thing when presenting those
