Bacon Is As Big a Cancer Threat as Smoking

Scientists have criticised suggestions that bacon, ham and sausages could pose as big a cancer threat as cigarettes.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) will publish a report on Monday on the dangers of eating processed meats.

It is expected to list processed meat as a cancer-causing substance, while fresh red meat is also expected to be regarded as bad for health, the Daily Mail said.

The classifications, by the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer, are believed to regard processed meat as "carcinogenic to humans", the highest of five possible rankings, shared with alcohol, asbestos, arsenic and cigarettes.

The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) has warned for several years that there is "strong evidence" that consuming a lot of red meat can cause bowel cancer.

It also says there is "strong evidence" that processed meats - even in smaller quantities - increase cancer risk.

Continued Experts attack claims that bacon is 'as big a cancer threat as smoking'

My father told me 50 years ago charred fat was a carcinogen. This applies to that tasty broiled steak too.

Did you know if you shave a lab rat's hair off and rub his skin with salt he will develop skin cancer?

To extrapolate that: salt causes cancer too?

I saw that yesterday too. Breathing causes cancer -- carry and wear a portable purified air tank? Do cockroaches or alligators get cancer? LOL The nastiest will inherit the earth.

Made some candied bacon as a topping for our new Frozen Custard stand. I expect it to be a popular item.

ok, suit yourself, don't eat bacon or any smoked meat or salt because there "may" be cancer causing substance/

in the meantime, we know the link between nitrites and cancer, thus my comment to remove the nitrites.

i.e., my point was it's important to take this sort of info with a grain of salt. well, no salt for you though.

Exactly. My mom is 75 and has eaten bacon or sausage every morning. She doesn't have cancer.

Although she has a had a stroke.

Trader Joe's apple smoked uncured bacon for me.

Here's one that caught me by surprise: Potatoes. Apparently the process of cooking starchy foods, which includes rice, pastas, and potatoes, causes the formation of acrylamide - a suspected carcinogen.

The program I heard this on suggested adding rosemary to your potatoes during preparation - I guess this is somehow supposed to block the acrylamide production.

So, as long as you eat your rice, pasta, and potatoes raw you're OK. Bon Appetite!

*(On a side note, a quick internet search is showing some results that suggest that raw potatoes may have some cancer fighting properties.)

That study is bogus anyway, but I dont eat or think that shit is good for you, maybe once a year.

Simply processing a animal into steaks and what not isn't going to increase anything besides salmonella poisoning. Almost every study into consumption of red meat makes the participants form rat to mice to humans consume only that or mainly that, skewing results.

Maybe in English processed meat means cutting meat into stakes, not sure.
What I meant by processed is adding preservatives, smoke, frying it directly on fire etc.

There is nothing wrong with eating processed food. In fact, quite the opposite, processed foods are easier to digest and have added nutrients and less insect shit that "organic" foods!

This is science people. Use come common sense for a change. You really going to pray to God when you have cancer and eat organic beans OR are you going to go to a Doctor and eat whatever chemicals he recommends. Exactly!

Now go munch a bag of kale and wash it down with a shot of wheatgrass from your neighborhood Whole Foods and go fuck yourself!

I don't think the processing of food itself is bad, more the nitrates and other shit they add as preservative. Go grab some fresh Bacon from your butcher.

Well I was completely addicted to Pepperami for about 4 yrs so I guess I used to eat like 5 a day - the red and the green ones but only after a full English Breakfast with all the works (Including the crispy bacon) and the black pudding, Irish style.
