Lots of unrefined palates here. Not terribly surprising.

I don't think saying "seafood" is fair.

The ocean/water system is massive. There are thousands and thousands of species to eat. One particular fish does not represent all seafood. Now I'm sure that you have tried several different types by this point, but what exactly have you tried? And what kind of meats do you eat usually?

I love sushi. When I try getting new people into sushi I start them out really slow with something that is very familiar with what they already know and something that they would most likely enjoy. For example, the California roll and shrimp tempura are great intros. I personally don't eat either of them because there are so many other better things to eat, but everyone that I have given those has slowly moved into eating sushi that I would eat.

If you can share some of your experiences and also some other meats that you enjoy (beef steak, pork, etc.) it could allow a few of us to give you suggestions on "seafood" that you might like. A great example is shark or tuna steak or even mahi mahi, each of these has a consistency more similar to a nice beef steak and could be a great intro for you. Shark is fantastic, if you like beef steak, I think you would like shark. Tuna and mahi mahi are more on the fishy side but the consistency is often still very steak like and easy to get into.

I am the same as the two of you. Many years ago, worked at a restaurant, chefs would try and convert me, but there's a certain flavour profile that I just can't get past. On occasion friends have gotten me to eat shrimp. And the only fish I would say I could get past would be tuna (not canned shit) just lightly seared sushi grade. To me its almost like red meat.

I tasted a chicken-something once from my BF, the bun tasted sooo sweet. Meh. I'd rather have an ice-cream if I have to eat there

All you guys are blowing my fucking mind right now. With the exception of the obvious (cock, poo, semen, tofu, etc), I have eaten and enjoy pretty much everything posted here. I go on food trips around the world specifically to eat more and more of this shit prepared in new ways. I'm going to Hong Kong next week just to try every street food vendor. Every. One.

Life without sushi, seafood, foie gras, veal, just doesn't seem worth living.

Have you had squirrel, durian or fugu? I don't know anyone who's had fugu and would love to hear about it if you have.

Actually when I was in Japan last year I was outside a place advertising it staring through the window... In a moment of weakness I chickened. Our guide had already explained how places need to be licensed by the government to sell it and how it's totally safe, but I wasn't feeling it...

I immediately regret it but after that we didn't find any other places. Next trip will have the fugu for sure.

Never come across durian yet, and I don't really consider squirrels or other rodents food... I didn't post this to claim I'm some sort of Andrew Zimmern guy, I just found it flabbergasting that there are people who don't eat sushi.

haha! The danger factor is exactly why I want to try fugu but I’d probably also chicken out at the last minute. Good luck next time!

I’ve smelled durian before but even though the smell is supposed to be different than the taste, I couldn't get over the smell so I didn’t try it. I’d still like to at some point. I’m sure you’ll be able to find some in HK.

As for squirrel, I never even knew people ate it until someone mentioned it on another board earlier this year. I’d certainly try it if it was prepared right but it’s not at the top of my list. I’m just kind of fascinated by the fact that people actually eat it. lol

I’m also pretty shocked about how many people in this thread have not tried such basic things like sushi or other types of seafood. It just seems crazy to me. I think generally the reasons stem from where you grew up and the amount of money you had a young age. Of course there are outliers but I’m pretty sure those are the two main reasons.

For example, if you grow up in a landlocked country like Czech Republic or somewhere in middle america you are less likely to try seafood at a young age unless your parents had the means to take you to nice restaurants or on nice vacations. I imagine that seafood (especially sushi) probably sucks in the Czech Republic or Nebraska unless you go to an expensive restaurant. I stayed in Prague for like 4-5 months and I don’t think I ate any seafood. And that’s the biggest city in the country, where you are most likely to find good seafood. I imagine that seafood options are much more limited growing up in a small town in CR or in rural Nebraska and that if you don’t make enough money to travel and try new things by the time you’re in your in your late 20s or 30, you are probably less likely to try them as you get older.

I've had squirrel. Squirrel stew is fairly common because the meat is so small and difficult to get at. Some people love it and some people think it's awful, always depends on the preparation. Another issue with squirrel is getting all of the hairs out, takes some work. Wild game can be tricky.

Wild turkey and pheasant are some of my favorite American wild game. Deer of course is great but that's more common and the flavor can also depend a lot on the diet of the deer. Depending on where you live and what kind of environment the deer came from can really have quite the impact.

I'd love to try more wild game. Last time I had venison it was from New Zealand. I don't know what they feed the deers there (kiwis?) but it was really good.

Here's the menu. Excellent restaurant. I also had the Kangaroo carpaccio.

Dinner | PUBLIC | New York City Restaurant

try smoked eel. If you don't think that is tasty, there's something wrong with you incomparable to any other fish.

Eel nigiri is a must for me whenever I go to a sushi joint. Seawater eel is amazing if you can find it.

I ordered uni once on accident, I meant unagi. That was interesting. The chef was impressed.

The first ingredient in good mashed potatoes is butter though...

hey all thanks for the replies. i tried smoked eel, yep.. also tried sushi, shrimp, tuna, carp, squid (right from the sea), etc. half the fish stuff was exquisitely fresh and top quality, but still... like someone said before me. these stuff have a taste profile i just can't get past :\

meats - i'm okay with those. mostly eating poultry for dietary reasons but i'm perfectly ok with red meat too.
