Two Australian surfers killed in Mexico

Bullshit, the real terrorists are hours away. RIP dudes.

Australian surfers feared murdered in Mexico during quest for 'crazy waves' - Telegraph

Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman, childhood friends who were both 33-years-old, were living in Canada and travelled to northern Mexico for a surfing trip but have not been heard from since November 20, when they were seen buying a map at an all-night convenience store.

The girlfriends of the men fear that a burnt-out van found in the coastal state of Sinaloa ? reportedly with two charred bodies inside ? matched the blue-and-white Chevrolet campervan being used by the pair as they camped and surfed during a trip from the town of Topolobampo to Guadalajara.
The burnt-out van was discovered at 10.30am on November 21, about 120 miles from the convenience store.

Josie Cox, the girlfriend of Mr Lucas, said the men were confident surfers and ?may have gone in search of waves in remote villages close by?.
?They are incredibly keen surfers, very talented surfers, they love finding crazy waves all around the world, much to my frustration sometimes in the past with Dean, dragging me to random spots,? she told The West Australian.
?I definitely don?t doubt that there?s something that?s happened, something that we should be worried about.?
Sinaloa is the home state of Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzman, one of the world?s best-known drug lords, who escaped from a maximum-security prison via a one-mile tunnel in July.

Guzman, head of the Sinaloa cartel, runs a billion-dollar trafficking empire and has been labelled the world?s most powerful drug lord by United States authorities.
Ms Cox, who is from London, said on social media that she was travelling to Mexico ?to get some answers".
"I definitely don't doubt that there's something that's happened, something that we should be worried about," she said.

Authorities in Sinaloa said the bodies were heavily charred and identification would take further time.
Ms Cox is travelling to the state capital of Culiacan with Mr Lucas?s dental records and Andrea Gomez, the girlfriend of Mr Coleman, is bringing ?pieces of dreadlocks? to assist with the DNA identification.
But images of the burnt-out van in Mexico suggested it belonged to the men.
"[It's] most likely theirs but I'm keeping positive it's not," Ms Cox told ABC News.
?Nothing is confirmed, it's just a similar van.?
?I definitely don?t doubt that there?s something that?s happened, something that we should be worried about.?
Josie Cox, girlfriend of Dean Lucas
The pair of avid surfers spent fifteen years travelling around the world and both speak Spanish.
Michelle Lucas, Mr Lucas?s sister, said on Facebook: ?[They have been] living in countries that lots of people may not consider safe but doing what they love, and following the good waves, and sharing their love of the travelling life with others. They spoke Spanish, among other languages, and have done things that many people in their lifetime don't get to do or are too scared to do.?

isitors to Sinaloa are warned to exercise caution and avoid leaving major roads. The drug trade has led to high levels of violent crime but there is also a risk of rural kidnapping and thefts, which are not necessarily drug-related but are more likely in remote areas and on quiet roads.
The families of the men are travelling to the region and released a statement saying they held ?deep fears? about the fate of the pair.
"He has gone to surf a bigger wave, I'll always miss you son," Zenandy Cattermole, Mr Coleman?s mother, said on Facebook.
"Our son's life has left us, but they will be with us forever in our hearts."

Ms Gomez, who is Mexican, said the pair may have rushed to reach Guadalajara, where she planned to meet them.
"They hurried to get here and I think they travelled by night," she said.
"I had told them of insecurity, but never told them of the horrible things that could happen. I feel a little responsible for that? Everything points to it being them because the van matches; it had a bicycle.?

This is why I don't go to Mexico any more... Ten years ago it was still kind of iffy outside of the tourist areas. Now... Fuck that. Last YP we went to someone had their SUV stolen.

They were undercover, transporting drugs or were mistaken for others doing so. This isn't the first time "surfers" were killed in the drug war there. No ransom? Vehicle burned. The cartels don't usually target whites without reason.

Or maybe things have changed. Chapo trying to send a message to America maybe.. :/

My guess is they thought they were American.. They weren't that far from America.

The amount of time since they were last seen and found is very little. They were targeted.

So they did not even ask them who they were? No ID check?
Imagine you want to target Americans and you see random English speaking dudes and do not ask where are they from to confirm? Hard to believe.

That isn't how it works. They don't stop them and have a spot of tea. They were most likely ambushed.

I didn't say it was a fact they were mistaken for Americans. They could've been targeted as suspected transporters for a rival cartel. Or even spies for the US government. It's a fucking warzone down there man.

I'll repeat the cartels don't murder whites without reason.

I understand that. But they would need to know that they were Americans somehow.
They would not ambush random white dudes (if there target victims needed to be specifically Americans).
There would be some kind of target identification process.

I mean you sound like this:
Gacho - we need to kill some Americans to send the message. Lets ambush the first white dudes we spot and kill them. And then hope that they turn out to be American.

I sound like they would at least ask where they are from or demand their ID's during the ambush. If they turned out not to be American just rob them and let them go. Or something. Random white dude killing and hoping they turn out to be American does not sound like a plausible plan.

You'd think. Maybe the van had American license plates? Who knows. I doubt we'll ever know for a fact why they were hit.

Probably drunk Mexicans doing what they do best. Kill people for no reason. The ones who shot them and burned them will be dead in a month by other dumb drunk Mexicans to be replaced by more dumb, drunk Mexicans. The cycle will never end until they ban tequila.

I just put that out there. It's a possibility. Chapo can't be happy with America right now. Please put more weight on my other theories most. If I was a betting man I'd say they were transporters or mistaken for DEA.

Depends which part... where they were... nope. Stick to California Del Sur... down south in Cabo and close areas are awesome, safe, and a great time.

I honestly think what happened here is these guys were travelling late. The article already said they bought a map at an all night gas station:

"when they were seen buying a map at an all-night convenience store."

So they were trying to get to Guadalajara much quicker and took some back dirt roads. Since that shit hole area of Mexico is inundated with drunk drug Mexicans with guns they have people stationed all over... and first station radioed another station that mysterious van is driving to el guapos estate to try and kill him. So all drunk Mexicans put an ambush on road, stop the car, shoot the two surfers, then likely 1 of the 5 drunk Mexicans realize that they were just 2 tourists so put their bodies back in the van, took the plates, torched the van with gasoline.

There was no thinking behind these killings... it simply boils down to drunk Mexicans. Period.

Come on man, is this a fucking joke?

You're white, you speak English, you're a fucking gringo, end of story

Slanty eyes, you're a fucking chino, end of story

Just like to Americans, you speak Spanish (you speak Mexican), you're a Mexican, end of story

Could they have been mixed up in some drug trade? Maybe, probably not

Could they have simply been killed for being in northern Mexico? Probably

Pretty sure this isn't the first time this has happened over the past few years

Violence is rare in the Cancun resorts area in Mexico, as being robbed and assaulted in the tourist zones. These areas have long been off limits, as rogue bandits know they will have a greater power to answer to, likely with their head, if they act without orders from the in-command cartel.

that's what I thought too, there is no mention of their surfboards being found, unless the boards completely melted down in the fire. but their bike was still there, depicted in a photo of the rear of the burnt out van.

true, but they were in a surf region, i could see how cold blooded thieves would already have plenty of bikes, but would be salivating over some nice boards. have you seen the price of nice boards lately? holy shit! wetsuits, all the gear, these guys prolly try to defend their gear and got shot. i have a hard time buying into the nefarious plot thinking, especially after these 2 pull over at 1am and buy a map. umm, you mean you didn't google that shit like a mother fucker before you left for "you should not travel to" mexico areas?

that sort of thinking would also lead them to strap a bunch of fancy surf boards to their van.

I didn't even think about the gear either, yeah pricey... the gf of one of the surfers who lived in Guadalajara stated that she regrets not telling them more about the dangers of traveling in Mexico.

Remember that white couple jet skiing on a border lake. The guy got shot and everybody thought the wife did it. Then the decapitated head of the chief investigator on the Mexican side was found in a box. Maybe nothing to do with the case, But people realized rough that area can get.

The van belonging to Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman was stopped on November 21 by a gang driving a car that flashed police-like lights on a road in Sinaloa, said chief state prosecutor Marco Antonio Higuera Gomez.

The suspects shot a long-haired man in the face when he resisted the robbery, Higuera told reporters.

The robbers killed the second man, drove the vehicle to another location and "set fire to the van with two bodies inside," Higuera said.
I can see this happening anywhere though. A paypal security expert was killed in Oakland, CA a few weeks ago when he resisted a robbery. Jon Orbeton. Known well in Computer Security circles.

There was also another tourist killed by the cartel in Mexico recently. He had been missing for sometime and some body parts were found on a beach the DNA tested as the missing tourist guy. This one was in Baja..

This was like the 3rd one that was the same MO.. Last year there was both a US guy and a French guy that were found dead and IDed from body parts in plastic bags.. All separate instances and all were tourists.
