Government launches porn site age checks consultation - BBC News

This quote from PornHub amused me:

But there isn't really anything black and white what classes as enough protective measures in place... Age gate? Tick box? Disallow UK debit cards?

What's worse is there are no clear systems in place that are simple to implement for site owners to become compliant either!

One solution is for all websites to switch over to a .adult TLD, and then ICM Registry can put a solution in place that allows access to all .adult (.sex, .porn, .xxx) websites in it's database.

That aside, the porn industry is 100% behind this move to block freeloaders from viewing their content. Under 18s traffic is as much use as Chines or Indian traffic. The problem is implementing effective filters to stop kids. Credit card as a verification is a nonstarter, for many reasons, any online box can be ticked by anyone, so the only method is what Germany has and that's a joke.

I suspect this will be kicked into the long grass or some legislation will waste Parliament's time and do nothing.

It's not just about payment, it's about secure age verification to protect children in the best way possible. This cannot be done by a payment scheme only, identification will need to be checked against the payment method, also phone verification on top of that.

It shouldn't be solely up to the government/ISP providers to protect children, the content distributors should do their job also. It's far too easy to access free porn, pretty unbelievable really.

Dr Victoria Nash, at the Oxford Internet Institute, was the lead author of a report for the government on child use of online pornography. She said that gambling sites may well also check registered users' credentials against data in the electoral roll or driving licence databases. Dr Nash added that it was likely porn site age checks would use similar methods to ensure users are 18 or over. The consultation document explains that the regulator of age checks on porn sites could be given powers to impose "sanctions" - including fines. the power to force internet service providers to block sites that did not perform effective age checks.
