Did you think if you don't have root access to your server than you don't have a dedicated server?

We keep running into people moving to us from what they thought was a dedicated server.

Yet, when we ask for the root login details for their server, the company they use now can't provide it. These are companies people talk about here all the time as being great.

So why else do you think you couldn't get root access to your own dedicated server?

I'm curious, because it kind of seems like these companies are charging dedicated server prices for nothing more than a shared account.

My server admin allows me root access. Then he stands by with a current back up to bail my ass out when I trash my server. You know, like he hasn't got anything else to do.

Not if it's managed. As they have to mend it when the client breaks it.

Or atleast on a client by client basis, if you know the client has a decent tech.

You want root? Buy your own server and pay colocation fees. Giving a client root on a dedicated machine is plain asking for trouble.

Managed dedicated server shouldn't want root access very often.
Just email admin to make server changes.

More often than not you don't need a root access. Sometimes they are withheld from a customer because dumbasses can't keep it safe and wreck their machines and then hosting company has to step in sort shit out.

I have root access on my dedicated, but never use it. It's easy to create a ticket request if I need something changed.

I even think I have root access on a 2nd server at a different hosting company.

So yes bottomline I stay out of trouble by not using it.
