Question for Hosting Companies

How commonplace is it to charge a customer for needed ram upgrades? As in, instead of them just adding it, I need to purchase the ram.
How commonplace is it for a hosting company to charge you for a switch? I had to buy this 6k juniper switch when we were getting attacked because the switch they had us on was 2 basic d link switches. I'm just curious as to your opinions. If I'm wrong please tell me. If I'm right please let me know too. I feel like I'm being bent over a keg.

6k for a switch? Never heard of such a thing. Monthly fee for adding 1 time ram without switching server... doesn't sound right either.

Yea, I know right? It's like the hardware is mine. I mean it is, and I made sure after paying these fees, but still, any of my previous hosts never charged me retail for server parts. Infact they never charged me at all. Also, I was building my own server and needed 100 4tb hard drives. I asked if they could do me a solid and purchase them and I'd pay them back. They were like sure, and the price they came back with was like 15% higher than amazon and new egg. Infact it was the same as the shelf price at micro center. I was like sheeeeeeeit, in my clay davis voice

You are being treated like a fool and ass raped without lube. Tell them to go fuck themselves (after you leave to a new host)!

In dedicated hosting? That's how it goes. The resource cost them money, so it costs you money.

That's a bit different. Do you own the router now? Doesn't sound like you're dealing with a good hosting company if they thought d-link switches were suitable infrastructure for critical use. A highend Juniper switch can also cost a good penny depending on the model. What model Juniper switch did they deploy?

Well, depending on the nature of the ddos attack, you may actually need that. Probably has 10gigabit interfaces and routing capabilities right?

Sounds like a pretty dope switch. You'll definitely get good resale value out of it if you ever sell it. Juniper gear is also extremely reliable and secure, my previous employer (mid-size webhosting / colo / ip transit provider) actually preferred Juniper over Cisco, their latest expansion is all Juniper.

Who is the hosting company if you don't mind me asking? Looks like dukedollars is hosted by isprime, is it them?

The only time I had to buy routers was when we had our own server racks in Seattle. I've probably used dozens of hosts too.
