How do you motivate yourself to get your ass back to the gym ??

Been almost 2 years now and i'm struggling to get fired up for re-joining again. I'm not overweight, but at 36 i am starting to see a belly sticking out instead of being toned up, and I feel like my arms are weak as shit again.

I have weights at home which I should be using again. Is that the best way to get me going again ? Start with those most nights. Get a feel for it again. And then re-join ??

Do you go before or after you do some work ?

I don't want to end up getting fat and wishing I went back much sooner than I did...

Take the plunge

Lay all your gear out so you trip over it after getting out of bed.
Do it before work and give yourself a 10 week goal.
Take a before picture to motivate yourself. Get a personal trainer if you need to be made to do it! Good Luck

P.S I have just gone with a personal trainer (post abdo surgery)

Nothing to do with motivation.

Preparation and creating a system. Put it on your schedule follow the schedule.

"Motivation" will take care of itself.

Late 30's is the age at which your body starts to fall apart. I think that you will feel motivated to get back into the gym when you find yourself hurting from immobility. Sitting at the computer for hours a day can really start to make you ache all over.
I like to hike and for me that's the best personal trainer out there. When you've hiked 45 minutes in the mountains and are no where close to your car you've really got no choice but to keep hiking. It keeps me fit, toned and clears my mind.

I don't have a problem with motivation.

However, making such things part of your routine helps.

There's no motivation anymore, I just force myself to go, some days the second I get on the weights I feel like I'm gonna fall asleep, but continue on. I'll hate myself otherwise.

I'm 28 and barely had any motivation for the gym before. The best thing to have for me was a workout buddy who pushed me to go to the gym. After about 2 months of that, it became routine and easy to go.

Have your regiment ready for when you go so you don't just wander around not being productive. I spend 1.5 hours at the gym at the most and come out dead. But the feeling is great afterwards.

Get on the ground and start stretching. Once you increase your flexibility it should be much much easier to go to the gym.

Start small. Tell yourself you'll go once a week. Then increase frequency slowly. Going too hard at first will almost surely result in long term failure. What I'm saying is, don't be on either end of the extreme spectrum -- couch potato or gung ho fitness boy. Cruise in the middle area, because long term adherence is more important than intensity.

Slowly work it back into your life until you can't live without it. That's my quote I just came up with. Just for you.

If you need help with diet let me know. I won't tell you exactly what to eat, but I can help with the mental part. Learning to think like a fit person is half the battle.

If you are into dudes, find a gym with open style gang showers. The thought of which stud you may encounter in the shower may be enough motivation to get you to the gym. Maybe even twice a day if there are a lot of studs at that gym.

If I don't want to, I don't force myself to go.
I prefer walking, running with my dog, hiking, swimming, aqua gym, group sports.

Life is too short to spend it doing things I don't enjoy.

at the core of all our behaviors is the same basic rewards circuit in the brain. from insects to humans, its the same in every brain. useful (survival related) behaviors are reinforced and rewarded to some degree and all others are suppressed to some degree.

the issue is not "motivation" per se.

the issue is that your brain favors those behaviors which are most rewarding and more importantly, most rewarding in the short term. with that said, as Sly said, your only real choice to change long term behavior is to create new habits.... or you have to find a reason that makes the pain of working out more "rewarding" than eating cupcakes and watching TV. for example, a person has a heart attack and working out then becomes more important than cupcakes.

your best bet is to simply create the habit (takes about 8 weeks) and to not look to others for "motivation".

at the end of it all, you can evaluate all human behavior by simply realizing and telling yourself that "people do what they WANT to do". if you "wanted" to be in the gym, you'd be in the gym.

and btw, if there was a successful way for one party to motivate another to workout and lose weight that could keep a person on track for more than 4-6 weeks, you could be the richest gym owner ever

as it is, gyms require a douchebag sociopath to demonstrate to a person that their life is at risk, ... heart disease, diabetes etc etc and that they won't live to see their kids graduate and then get them to sign a multi-year contract in the moment... knowing they will only be there for 4-6 weeks.

Do not forget food. You gained it because you ate too much ( more calories in than out).

did you just hack motivation? pretty fuckin impressive man.. hehe

My advice is normally to set a goal to train for specifically. The goal can't be abs or being lean, those aren't goals really they are the results of training for goals and more specifically they don't really have a finish line so it doesn't work. For me it was training for a race or training for a sport. Whether it was increasing my vertical leap (i'm short so that is a big one) or being able to do a muscle up it's got to be something that raises the bar for you--whatever that may be. I have been struggling with it myself lately and just need to bring back that focus to get back in there again. Now that some better weather is hear it will help no doubt.

Oh, and cut down on sugars and starches, those are belly rounders for sure.

Longest time I have been out the gym for in the last 6 years is a month and that was my wedding/honeymoon. I go consistently, some days I do not want to be there but I power through because I know after it I will feel a lot better.

Your motivation is in your post, your belly is getting flabby and you feel weak, that is enough motivation to at least go back for a session and get all the feelings back that come with working out. Power through the first 2-3 weeks and it becomes routine, a few weeks later and you'll be seeing some initial results, that will be you hooked again.

Boy so much good advice makes me want to go workout

Stretching is great advice... also a trainer or class waiting for you is motivation.

If you don't want to spend the extra money then setting a goal.

I get up, put on my gym clothes then stop at the gym and do 20 minutes elliptical... great way to work up a sweat without fucking up your knees
