Do you think there are too many programmers/designers now?

Seems like there are more development people than projects to develop.

There are many, but not too many that can handle the task and do good job.

Some time ago I had some more complex coding to be done. I described the thing in a smallest detail, created some visualizations etc. and I contacted like 30 coders. Most of them told me they had no time (right.... some did not even ask how much I?m willing to pay, they were all excited at first but then once they realized it's not a wordpress job or a simple piece of code... yeah...) some other told me: "Sure, send us the details!" But then after 1-3 days "Sorry, we can?t, bla bla bla". (Mostly guys from India, South America and a few from US and UK) And only 1 from Eastern Europe said yes, took the job, and did it. |

When I first started off in this industry, you had to be a jack of all trades. You had to be a recruiter, photographer, designer, programmer, server admin, businessman, and accountant. Most of us did all of this or at least most of this. Now... Not so much.

On the other hand, programmers and designers are easy to find. A charity I worked for needed a custom blog designed, quickly found someone, and for $200 had a great wordpress blog designed.

Developers and designers are really many now, but many of them are self-taught and have superficial knowledge. Someone has learned to do something in Photoshop on video lessons on YouTube and decided that he is a good specialist. But this is not so. And when you really need something good and unique, you have to find a real expert. And these guys are not cheap. Just many people think if once the average price on the market is such, then why pay more to a specialist. Therefore, they hire a cheap designer or developer, and then they wonder why he made shit.

Very few guys who do cheap and high quality. Usually they are from Eastern Europe. |

The market is overwhelmed with developers now indeed. But that's quite convenient for webmasters. As if the supply is bigger than the demand the price level goes down.

But I said that after watched a couple of lessons on Youtube, some consider themselves to be good specialists, but in fact they are not. And therefore they don't perform work qualitatively, since their knowledge is a superficial. Have you had any experience of hiring such performers? I had. Nothing good came of it. |

The market is flooded with SHITTY developers, yes. It takes me months to hire someone competent locally - but there is no shortage of people applying.

It depends on the level of skills. My brother is a programmer, but no one in online porn could afford/pay him. It's the same with designers. The best have fled.
