Damn! Here a 3 bedroom apartment is about $1500 a month and if you want a house it will run you $2000+

yeah, you´re right about Portugal´s cheaper than Spain, here 400€ gets a nice apartment and 600€ a month a nice villa with a pool...

eating out is about the same

Our electric and water is about 150€ a month and we spend about 400€ a month on shopping, inc. cigs at 4€ a pack. This is for good food, fresh meat, bbq´s, steak and alcohol daily, wine, beer, maybe limon cello or what ever we choose that day...

If it's like Spain then rural internet probably isn't great. I did 5 years up mountain, about a mile from the nearest town and 2mb was the best I could get.

I live in the country side about 35 Km from Porto and have 1GB connection. But in general Portugal is pretty cheap to live if you stay outside big cities and tourist areas.

Exceptions are car prices and gas which are very expensive.

City center Lisbon is NOT cheap, if you goto outskirts of the big cities or popular tourist/beach areas it can be cheaper but in general the cost of living and real estate in Portugal has increased alot over the past 3-4 years.

You live down river from me, I'm in Zamora, right on the river. if you find loads of old tennis balls, that my dog. hehe.

Rural, very small village of around 800 people but is inside Porto Metropolitan area. I have very good cable internet but mobile network do suck.

I never found tennis balls but did found some football (soccer ) balls

It depends on what you need I guess. You can have a bunch of expenses even in the most affordable places if you want fancy stuff.
After visiting Portugal for TES in March I spoke with some locals about the cost of living there. They're saying people get by fine on 800 EUR/month or so. That's very affordable for western Europe. I suppose you have to be local and frugal to get that kind of expenses.

I don't need much. I just need a pretty chill environment. Maybe hop on a highway and find my family and I in Italy one weekend then later, France. I've heard such great things about Portugal.

Can US citizens get extended stay visas? How long is the 'default' stay given to Americans in Portugal?
