A yearly music, movie and interactive festival that spans several weeks in March, attracting thousands and thousands of people to Austin Texas.

It's kind of funny though. Half the people are happy (less traffic) and half the people are sad (lost money.)

Curious how much money that's going to cost the city.

Every article I see talks about it getting down to the wire and they need to make a decision pretty soon.

I know it was a tough nut to swallow for them, but with the main sponsors dropping out, did they have a choice?

Sponsors, speakers, etc.

I don't know the details, but I have a feeling the locals had a lot to do with it. Fear of stretching our medical system with way too many potential sick people. The homeless population getting sick is a big concern, that would have been (could still be) madness.

There was probably no right answer.

No free samples at Costco.... it's like prayers have been answered. No more having to push through waves of old people and everyone else plus thier stupid fucking kids at the end of every aisle because they want a slice of frozen waffle.

It's on the front page of NYT as being cancelled.

I've been a guest on the tech side of SXSW and most people seemed pretty great at math, so this is a surprise. I know the city requested the cancellation, but I heard that was partly an insurance requirement.

Seriously, though, normally, if 300 people in the US have something happen to them and like 10% of those have a really bad time and a handful even die ... it is a tragedy for those involved, but it is not 24/7 hysterical news and cancellation of events people wait all year for.

The SXSW cancellation is a really big deal for a lot of the musicians and filmmakers involved with those parts of the event.
