i tend to avoid using github, it's trying to do so much with it's thousands bells and whistles... also they sold out to microsoft which okay - money talks.
i use sr.ht for my repos which is a minimalist service and it works well. its also got an unusual payment system - you subscribe but you choose the money amount they'll charge every month.

github situation has parallels with porn tubes situation i think. historically microsoft were trying to kill opensource projects that competed with their proprietary software . now everyone uploads their source code to a service owned by them.
tubes, who grew by stealing everyone’s content now decide who will receive a little but of traffic from them by uploading their content to the tubes. funny how things work out…
