Price of living in northern California ??

Hey guys, I know a lot of you are from California.

I was wondering what the price of living is over there. A good friend of mine graduated college and was offered an job in Redwood City. He say rent is something like $1200/mo for a 1 bedroom apartment. Is this true? It's only $500 here. That's nuts! Also, he was offered $60k.

If anybody can offer me some insight on how much things cost around there, it'd be great! My wife and I are planning on moving somewhere in a few years... California is on our "places to visit" list too.

But if things are so highly priced over there, and I make the same amount of $$ as an adult webmaster, then maybe somewhere in the midwest is better for me financially.

Any thoughts?

If your friend is paying only $1200 for a 1-bedroom apt, then that apt is next to a crack house, a liquor store and has hookers standing in front of it.

My wife's cousing just bought a house in San Francisco. Just an average/below average part of town. 40 year-old house, 3 bd, 1 ba, 1 car garage. 1600 sq. ft. , 3000 sq. ft. lot.
Price?: $650,000

Ouch!

Redwood City?

Try more like $1800 a month, and everything else costs more too, like food, gas, restaurants, shit like that.

Oh yeah, the house needed "TLC", which means it was just a couple steps above "handyman special".

Keyser, yeah, homes there cost a hell of a lot. Here in GA, you can get a decent 2 bedroom apartment for as low as 400 a month. But prices really fluctuate amongst states, and you would not believe some of the prices that you could be charged.

Thanks for the input. I don't leave the Iowa/Missouri/Minnesota area very often. The difference in price is now becoming a reality to me. I never even thought about the cost of living in other areas.

$1800/mo!
$650k for a house!

For 650K you could buy a mansion in Iowa near DesMoines and still have money for a car, a boat, and a mail-order wife!

GA sounds kind of like the prices of Iowa.

The prices here are insane. There's a house for sale near my girlfriend's place. It's a one bedroom, one bath, total piece of crap, might as well be living in a cardboard box house for $340,000. From San Jose up the peninsula to SF is real expensive. Fremont and the east bay is a little better in some places. Going farther south to Gilroy, etc. you can get into a nice house for about $230,000.

I'd advise going to Southern CA. Rentals are cheaper in the outlying cities. My brother pays $700 for a 2 bedroom apartment in Van Nuys.

All that Northern Califonia pricing shit started about 5 years ago..all cause of the net. I grew up in San Jose and it's always been computer central, and never that expensive. But once the internet got big, all the dot-coms parked there businesses there and drove the housing prices right up.

With the economy still going down, and dot-coms continuing to fold, i'm curious to see where the real estate market will end up in the following years.

Regardless, can't beat Southern California (in my opinion)

I'm moving to LA (Venice) in two weeks...! It's not cheap, but if you really look you can find a nice place to rent for 1200/month.
Yeah we make the same $ anywhere, so why live in a place like NY or San Francisco... I can't wait until we have high bandwidth wireless internet that we can take overseas... I will be on the beach in Brazil or on some fucking island w/ my laptop... It's only a matter of time before the technology is there and we will be free -- you can probably already do a lot w/ the right satellite setup... This two-way satellite stuff is pretty exciting, but so far there's not any easy way to bring the dish w/ you on a trip...

The Fly,

Why in god's name would you want to live in Venice? Lock your doors/windows at all times and watch out for those little gang bangin fuckers. LOL I don't know how well you know the area. You may have grown up there for all I know. But, there is a reason you only have to pay $1,200

Keyser,

Northern Cali varies greatly. California in general is expensive compared to other areas of the country. There are still cities up there that can be reasonable. But, they are all in bumfuck egypt. Anywhere near the Bay area, Silcon Valley, etc. (a decent area anyways) will cost A LOT.

BTW, Where I live $650,000 won't even buy you a house. I'm in SoCal in one of the FEW nice areas LA County has to offer. Average 2 bdrm, 1 bath house will run you around $950,000, if you get lucky. It's disgusting, but true. I would never buy here or up there, way too much money for far too little. I love SoCal but I don't want to have to move to the Valley just to be able to afford a house. Even in the valley, if you want to live somewhere decent, you're still looking at $350,000 for a very modest home. It's cheaper in the outskirts...and I do mean outskirts. San Bernadino County you can still find ahouse for $250,000.

I have no idea why I just went on a rant about SoCal prices, you asked for Northern Cali...oh well if you change your mind and come down here, at least you'll have an idea.

And btw...if I was moving to Cali and about to put up with all the shit that comes with it....why not move where the weather is always nice? I can't imagine living anywhere in Cali, but southern. Best weather in the world.

An old joke from the Marx-Brothers (in the Redwood City-Version):
Is it possible to live in Redwood City with 1$/week - Sure it is, it's only impossible to eat or rent an appartment *rotfl*

A little further north of the Bay Area pricing gets better. When I was living in the East Bay I was paying $2,500. a month for a two bedroom townhouse. Now I'm up near Sacramento and I'm in a 3BR/2B house with a fenced in yard full of rose bushes and lemon and tangerine trees for $1,400/month. AND I'm only an hour and half from Reno.

Yeah it's expensive as fuck to live. But it is a great life. I love the bay area. Wish I'd never left.
