When leaving a computer, is it better to:

Say for anything from 20 minutes to more gone...

Put it in standby mode?

Leave it on with Screensaver?

Leavie it on with Screensaver and delayed energy saver?

Hahaha .. this isn't 1990 bro. Screensavers are not neccessary for any monitor made in the last 5 years. They are only for 'fun' now.

Seeing as we are webmasters my bet is they don't leave it on the same image for more than a few hours... in between checking stats they probably jerk off a few times.

My monitor does the standby thing after 10 minutes, but I never let my harddrive do the power saving thing. It just doesn't seem to like to reboot again after.

Not to sound dumb, but I've always wondered what "standby mode" exactly does? does that consume power/electricity, or not?

Pull the plug for that storm. A simple off doesn't do it on todays computers.

Been There, Done That........ I had to take a last minute trip and I was scrambling around, forgot half the stuff I needed to pack and left the PC running, same image 4 days and the screen was fine.

Most harddisk crasshes happen at boot time.

Actually, either I have really bad luck or you guys are full of shit. My LCD shows a little burn sometimes on the top of the screen from my IE bar. It isn't anything too bad like words or images, but instead I can see the horizontal lines quite often.

Nobody else gets this?

Monitor after 20 mins.

Disks after 15 mins.

System Standby after 30 mins.

Power off everynight before bed. Confirms proper bootup each day.

Storm is the only time my computer goes off.. sometimes the only time its even restarted. Earlier this year I had my machine running for over 20 days without being restarted. The last month or two it seems like its storms every week

I haven't used the energy saving thing since 1999. I used to have a 24/7 streaming cam using webcam 32 and even though the energy saver wasn't standby it would still manage to crash the cam software.

Nowdays I just turn my monitors off and close the laptop.

24/7 not a good idea i think, screensavers i don't like because they up some resources, expecially very cute once.

the 24/7 problem - as been said before may affect your monitor which i usually turn off manually, the big problem is with harddrives, don't wear out your HD's, with time they become lauder and eventually brake. another thing air flow - you don't want your PC collect dust when it's idle. let the system go off like after 15 min monitor off, after 30 min HD and after 1h whole system.

awake it with mouse or touch of power/reset button, depending on your configuration.

and if you live in the area of constant thunderstorms, powering off might save your equipment. which you already know ;)
