9.34% of my visitors use Netscape 4

9.34% of my visitors use Netscape 4, the #2 browser used! #1 is MSIE 5. 80.03% of my visitors use that.

anyway, i checked out my sites with Netscape 4 and some of them didn't even load and most of them looked like shit. i highly suggest checking your sites with Netscape 4 if 10% of your traffic means anything to you.

download netscape 4 here: http://netscape.com/download/archive.html

You know HQ, I used to care about Netscape and what happened to them, but then they got bought by AOL, and bended over, let all thier talent go and finally started to make shit... Fuck them, litterally. All they do anyway is take the code from http://www.mozilla.org and put their logo on it.

If you care or wanna help, do some code review like me, try to fix some bugs (by creating more), submit em, or simply do your nightly build and submit more bug reports. Thats a way much better way to get involved then anything else ;-) It's really cool thing to do even if you do nothing but just try tounderstand what they do.

Besides, it look very nice on a resume (Unless you apply to Microsoft)

Hey, I STILL use Netscape 4.76 !!! I have the newest version of Explorer on my computer, which I know, I know, Explorer is much better than Netscape. The thing is that there's just things about Netscape that I like better like the bookmarks for one thing.

You might ask "Why do people like me still use Netscape 4 ?", Well, if you ever tried the newest version of Netscape, I think that it's 6, you'd know that it TOTALLY SUCKS, I ended up uninstalling it after a couple of days of using it, talk about a HORRIBLE browser.

At least I know that my pages are working in both versions of the browsers. That's one good thing about using Netscape. One of these days, I'm gonna jump back over to Explorer though.

Be sure to open and close your TABLE tags correctly ... a little error on it will not be noticed in MSIE but it can cause the total page not to load in NS ...

My biggest problem of this moment is to use IFRAME's ... Fucking netscape is showing nothing of an iframe !!!

Soon I will add a javascript that says GO FUCK YOUSELF to netscape users !!!

We just have use some of the newer stylesheets to make netscape act weird on our pages. If we all make pages that only IE can see, then we can slowly kill that horrible browser and help Microsoft conquer the world

I use fast broswer, which is based on IE. I love it, pop-up windows show up in tabbed windows underneath the current window you are using. You can hit the little tabs and go back and forth. Sometimes, I'll have GFY on a tab, and a few other things I like to check often, then what ever I'm cruizing on top. Works for me Also use NetCapter, which is also a tabbed interface.

"Hello, I'm RedShoe, and I'm a recovering netscape user"

I was fucking die hard about netscape. I knew it all, but then things started to not work. Links didn't work properly. I just thought that's how a browser works. Then a friend or two suggested IE5.

At first I hated it, but I'm slowly seeing that it is superior to netscape. It's more interactive for your visitors. Like bookmarking is easier for IE, and I think that's important for repeat visitors.

Also with outlook you can check all your accounts with the click of one button. I feel like an idiot, because with netscape, I had to change the settings for all my different accounts.

Now I run netscape only so I can check to see if my html will hold up.

I'm with Slick, one thing that was a lot better in Netscape was the bookmarking.

IE has pathetic bookmark controls. for something so important to the surfer, you'd think they'd improve it.

I use IE but have netscape as my home page. I just like it better than the IE one.

I used to use netscape 4.7 exclusively but then made the god awful mistake of downloading v.6 ,what a buggy piece of shit.

I, immediately, e-mailed them about patches... to my knowledge they still haven't put any out. Wouldn't use them anyhow.

What a disaster that browser is and continues to be. If 10% of people use netscape, I'm pretty sure most are still using 4.76, which is why I still test my pages in it as opposed to 6.

out of 13k hits on one page, approx 10k was IE and 3k Netscape - that's a damn sight higher than i would have first guessed

As the US government are at position 35 on my most common country list and the US military are 43rd - i wonder what browsers they are using?

...while we are on the topic of making our sites look good on ALL browsers... how about making them look good in ALL resolustions too. here's my stats for screen resolutions:

<font size=+2>
<pre>
Screen Resolutions Unique Visitors

800x600 923879 55.58%
1024x768 501852 30.19%
640x480 109606 6.59%
1280x1024 47415 2.85%
1152x864 44361 2.66%
Other 28409 1.70%
1600x1200 6435 0.38%
</pre>
</font>

over 50% of my visitors use 800x600. so you definitely cannot ignore that. some of you out there have sites that do not fit in 1024x768. do you realize how many visitors see your site too big for their screen? you must make sure your sites look good in 800x600 first, and then 1024x768. it should look the best in 800x600. then 2nd best in 1024x768, and then we have 640x480 in third. i don't mind having a site that is slightly too large for the 640x480 surfers, as i'm sure they are very use to ever site being too large for their screen.

hope this helps,

Thanks HQ for a peek at your stats. I get it now. You can read about the demographics from cnet or whatever but it's nice to see it in practice.

Also, the res issue is a serious one. I had no idea so many people use 1024x768. Uh-Oh is all I have to say.

What is the easiest way to make sure it fits? I'm assuming using percentages instead of actual pixels in making your tables but I have always had probs doing it that way. Too many browser compatibility issues.

Thanks,

April

Yea, I'm one of those 800x600 people, I only have a 17 inch monitor, and the print gets way too small if I go with a wider screen. I build all mine for 800x600, lol.

Must be all those people using LCD screens on their desk and laptop. Most LCD's seem to work best at 1024 X 768.

aprilkorova,

it's not as much of a matter with the people who use 1024x768... it's the 800x600 users that are the trouble (#1 spot). make sure your site looks good in 800x600. if it doesn't, can you imagine what it looks like on the 640x480 screens (#3)?

once your site looks good in 800x600, it almost always looks good in 1024x768. this kills the top 85% of your visitors with one blow.

640x480 is another story. these surfers, as i said before, are USE to having sites that are too big. www.altavista.com and all the major sites do not fit on their screens. so, it's 'ok' to not conform to their choice. these users are old and outdated. they'll eventually see the light.

a good way to quickly check different resolutions (in windows) is go to go display properties, settings, advanced, and click on 'show settings icon in task bar'. this allows quick screen resolution changes. whenever you make a design change, you can quickly test it in all resolutions.

... also, one last thing is that 95% of my visitors use WINDOWS. so if you are using a MAC, go test it out on a Windows machine. i'm sure an IE windows browser and an IE max browser are not entirely identical.

I just had no idea so many people were using 1024x768! EEEK! LOL Had to go back and make sure I was OK ,having scripted without them in mind.

aprilkorova,

no problem at all. glad you appreciate this.

also, the number of 1024x768 users are increasing. just a few months ago, maybe up to 6 months ago, i remember that they were only 25% of the total. now they are 30%. soon enough, they'll be at 50% instead of 800x600.

The only reason i keep Netscape 4 on my computer is to use it specifically to check my sites while i create them and before i launch them.

I always design in 800x600, even though i personally view everything at 1024x768.

So basically, i have to change my setting when i design. And the only browser i use to check the site(s) is netscape since you never really have to worry about IE.

Design in 800x600 and keep netscape 4 on hand to check them with, and all should be fine.

Arrggghhh!! use a 3rd party checker unless you only have like 5 icons on the screen or your icons go to h*ll in a hurry!! Never ever use MS settings to recheck the appearance! I did that once and it took forever to get the icons back on the screen even with a auto reset.

Rule of the week...Percentages will make em all look ok.

You guys are mistaken -- there's no way to design in 800x600 -- BECAUSE font sizes and multiple platforms prevent you from guessing what something will look like. Better to use common sense and your knowledge of HTML to know how things will scale. Never use pixel dimensions in your web pages...

Lets say you are mistakenly designing for 800x600 and you use a pixel specification like "width=590" on one of your tables -- then someone goes to your site w/ a high fucking resolution screen and he has font sizes that are much larger (people at higher resolutions use fonts that take up more pixels) because they are easier to read... then your site will look fucked up because of the pixel tag... all the text will get bunched up and your site will look wrong.

Anyway NyLos I had the same problem -- my site wasn't displaying in Netscape at all because I had 6 nested tables and I forgot to close one of them

anyway most of you know what you're doing and maybe you aren't using pixel width's w/ a center tag at the top -- I used to do that but it looks bad at higher resolutions...

anyway this is off topic haha..

USE OPERA it ROCKS!!!!!!!

TheFly, good point. Don't 'hard-code' anything on your site, unless absolutely necessary. just be smart with it and check it out in higher resolutions with bigger fonts.

the trick to quickly change font sizes (in IE) is to hold CTRL and scroll your 3rd mouse button.

just like that, quick trick to see if your page is to load into a 800X600, or 640X480 Page...

What I do when I design my page is I had `line, simple < hr > with a width of 40 pixels less than the desired with... so
760 or 600, and it will always fit right if that is the biggest thing in width in your page

you do what you want with that tip hehe
