Serious DRAMA - possible breaking news - have you heard?

I was just told that ICANN has changed the transfer policy on domain names so that if someone requests a transfer on one of your domains, you have 5 days to explictly deny the transfer but the shitty thing is if you don't reply, the transfer will occur by default! the only way to protect yourself is to make sure your domains are locked!

apparently this goes into effect in two days.

Can anyone verify this rumor?

Important Notice Regarding your Domain(s)
******************************************

Dear Valued Go Daddy Customer,

Effective November 12, 2004, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will institute a new transfer policy for all accredited domain name service providers.

The previous ICANN policy allowed us to deny requests to transfer your domain names to another registrar unless you explicitly confirmed to us your intent to transfer. The new ICANN policy removes that protection. Starting November 12, when we receive a request to transfer your domain name to a new registrar, we will still attempt to contact you to confirm that you authorized the request. However, if you do not respond, or are not able to respond within 5 days, your domain name WILL be transferred.

With this change in mind, we are recommending that all Go Daddy domain customers visit GoDaddy.com and "lock" their domain name(s). Locking your domain(s) is free and prevents unauthorized changes to contacts and name servers. Most importantly, it prevents the domain name from being transferred to another registrar without your knowledge. You may lock or unlock your domain at any time.

To lock your domain names:

Go to: https://www.godaddy.com/?isc=gdficgdout
Click My Account and enter your username or customer number and password.
Click Manage Domains.
Select the domain name(s) that you wish to lock.
Click Set Locking. In the right side pane, select "Lock" and save your changes.

After your changes have been submitted, there will be a short duration while your request is pending update. During this period, details of the domain(s) will be temporarily unavailable.

If you have any questions please email us at [email protected] or call our customer support line at (480) 505-8899.

To review the new ICANN transfer policy, please visit: http://www.icann.org/transfers/policy-12jul04.htm

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,
GoDaddy.com Domain Support

i was under the impression that the only thing locking them does is force the registrar to have to try & contact you before doing any modifications... according to this new rule it seems that if they contact u & u dont reply, they will still transfer, regardless of the lock ?

No problem;
I am working on a script right now that will request a transfer of all domains associated with icann every 5 days until the fuck up.

I don't know who thought up this dumbass shit but expect them to pay a load of legal fees and lose.

But until they lose I'm going to fucking pound the transfer for Yahoo! Because if it actually went through that would be the end of that fucking shit.

My partner came up with a reasonable explanation as to why.

There have been numerous times that registrars have failed or refused to respond to requests to transfer domains. This might be ICANN's way of combating it.

Not sure that this was the smartest way of handling it though.

If you lock you domains they cannot be transfered or altered in any way unless you unlock them. Its pretty fucking easy to understand from my point of view.

Go lock your domains and stop trying to scare all the kids into thinking their sites will be taken away.

I think the new rule applies to the transer of a doman from one registra to another. So the result of the subject email would be an attempt to keep more domains registered at Go Daddy. The owner of the domain name still starts the process of the transfer to another person as far as I know???

See:

http://www.icann.org/announcements/advisory-12jul04.htm

Still smart to lock down your domains.
