Domain Hijacking: Watch your ass if you use registerfly

I know of a guy that just lost a few hightraffic domains from registerfly, They give you a HUGE sense of false security, they were then sent to Directi.com and qnic.com or whatever, I noticed on GFY that these guys seem to be harboring alot of the hijackers.

Status: Protected --> Does not mean fucking anything at all.

You have to find the option at the very bottom of the page called Fly-Lock, which i'am pretty sure is not much better anyways.

"Protection," in registerfly parlance, means privacy protection. You're right, you need to "lock" the domains to block inter-registrar transfers, not "protect" them, and locking provides no guarantees.

I have been researching stuff on GFY, you seem to be very knowledgeable with this stuff, any advice on how people OR if people can get them back?

You need a registrar who will work on your behalf to get them back, as they can enact changes through ICANN, avoiding the need for lawyers and courts. They can either work informally with the gaining registrar, or formally through an ICANN "domain transfer dispute resolution" (DTDR) filing. The alternative would be to go through the legal system, but these are almost all international cases, and it would be a very expensive and very time-consuming mess. Ideally the registrar who lost the doman (registerfly) should work on your behalf to return the domains...if they don't, publicize the details as much as possible, to warn others and perhaps pressure them to reconsider. If they still won't help you, any other ICANN-accredited registrar can also work for the domains return on your behalf, through ICANN, but they're businesses, so I'd expect you'll need to give them a financial incentive to do so. If you've only got a couple domains, the $2 or $10 annual "profit" they make on the registration is not going to cover their time to persue a DTDR procedure.

Oh, I should also mention that the gaining registrar (directi, qnic, or whomever) should also be contacted - they may be able to quickly determine a transfer was fraudulant, and at least restore your DNS settings immediately. The losing registrar would presumably contact them as well, but it might be faster talking to them directly.

I wouldnt contact qnic.. They are part of the thefts..

The site has changed 3 times in 3 days.. at first it was an affiliate program that you could simply add any domain to and it would install iframes for you ( hrmmm )

Now it looks like they have placed a registrar fake front page on it.

I'm slowly moving all my domains away from RF to DirectNIC... Halcyon's story about getting a domainname unlocked by phone (without any form of verification) has alarmed me.

RF is gonna lose a lot of business on this fault

doesnt matter who your registrar is, keep your domains locked, per the new ICANN regulations, a domain can easily be transferred away if they are not locked
