any UK people around?

Im looking into a possibility to relocate to UK as a sole rep for a company i work for, what place would you recommend to stay in? I mean since its web company it doesnt need to be central London location but anyway what's considered good but still affordable in UK?

LOL! Sunderland?

The UK is a big place. Very expensive the closer to London you live, so be careful about picking a location. I really don't know why you would want to move to the UK tho, it sucks balls. I'm trying to get out of it.

You may find this link helpful (I'm not yet allowed to post URLs so sorry for the format changes)

w w w . channel4 . com/4homes/ontv/best&worst/2007/top20/index.htm

Ross is spot on with London - great place to visit but very expensive to live there - especially if your job does not oblige you to be there. Keep in mind your proximity to airports (depends on where you currently call home) and where you would like to visit for weekends and for longer holidays.

Simple "rule of thumb" = further North gets cheaper but the people will welcome you quicker - further South gets more expensive and the people will take longer to get to know you.

I'd generally agree with the North/South thing although it's obviously a huge generalisation. Remember there's also Wales which has wonderful countryside and has relatively cheap housing...

Ignore him..... Hull is awful and slough and sunderland are not good either, check this out:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4136342.stm

My suggestions are:

London, Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Derbyshire, Cheshire, Devon, Cornwall, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Milton Keynes, Cardiff and Bristol. My favourite choice on affordable would be Sheffield.

Sheffield is an awesome city, very green and attractive, central and not too far from London. It has very low rent or purchase prices for property and low crime too. Clubs are great and the people are amazingly friendly.

on the long term true.. recently moved to Spain

but for a few years London is a great place to live, doesn´t have to be that expensive either if you house share

suggest you make up your own mind, just book a place anywhere for a week or two and follow up on ads in http://www.loot.com/property , http://www.gumtree.com/

Nottingham is pretty good, plenty to do, good nightlife, not too expensive and pretty central so you are never more than 2-3 hours away from most of the other major cities.

There is some crime, particularly gun crime but it's no worse than London and it's just a case of picking the right area to live in as it is with most Cities.

LMAO.

Alot of people in this thread are trying to fuck you over, whatever you do, do NOT go to:

sunderland
hull
grimsby
nottingham
slough
newcastle

down south is the best (london, bristol, southampton), with the exception of manchester and sheffield.

If you want "nice" then I'd say somewhere like Bath, was there fairly recently and thought it was one of the nicest looking places I've been to in the UK. Although I guess with most nice places it'd get boring after a little while.

London's expensive and full so don't come here

When i left London 12 years ago BUPA was about the only private health care provider im sure there are more now but BUPA was great if you didnt want to wait for National Health doctors!
Steer clear of Hounslow, Wembly and Haze in Middlesex They are now all Indian citys, great food but everything else is in Indian so its difficult to understand much unless you speak Indian

Yeah, you said the difference yourself, yet you still don't notice it. We are clever enough to notice and speak about the things wrong with our country. Unlike Americans who refuse to admit that anything is wrong and think their country is perfect.

Well... honesty and reality is a character quality. Maybe Americans will get a clue and start talking reality as well instead of waving the flag

Seriously L-Pink - there is little difference. Just read this thread and reminded me why we moved - there is no way would dream of living in the UK (or the US) again. The quality of life is crap - overgoverned, overcontrolled and overtaxed and that was in what is supposed to be in one of the best parts of the country. Gimme a palm tree for shade, a beer and no taxation anytime

Don't worry so much about Russell Square being bombed - just concentrate on avoid eating crap and being solvent after paying taxes

Seriously... sure would not like to live on $5K/month in the UK - that's less than 2500 GBP.

ok sorry i was being a twat, ignore all the places i said.

all cities in the uk are nice, to an extent, its the area you choose and yeh that budget is fine, thats about 25k i think you will have to budget definitley, i mean petrol is very very expensive here!

I think choose somewhere down south. north is bad with a few exceptions. to be honest i havent explored britain too much, but nice places up north is stratford, warkwick and lemmington spa. (stay away from coventry though).

to be honest though i think its better if you suggest some places and others say yes or no to them.

How much is a beer and a packet of cigarettes in the UK now Scotty?

Had a few UK people here recently and they were saying a beer is around $6 and cigarettes about $10?? They were stunned at the prices here, but smell they were exaggerating the UK costs??

We pay about .50-60 cents for a decent beer and a pack of cigs is about .60cents (I think)

Can't remember the actual rates, but remember paying a load of staff that kind of money many years ago - that was when stuff was a lot cheaper - so suspected it may not be an easy life living on that.
