Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Wtf?

Downloaded the movie and watched like the first 15 minutes.

Then closed the media player and continued working.

Do you have to read the book to get this movie?

I went to it last week. Afterwards I begged for my 2 hours back.

Horrible movie. Though my friend said the book was 10 times better.

the book has a huge cult following, some reviewers said they butchered the book, as often happens when they make movies from books but i'd still be interested in seeing it. so where did you download it from ;)

Even if you haven't read the book, it's not too difficult to follow along.

I loved it.

Definitely enjoyable, methinks, but mostly by those that have read the book(s). From what I heard it was partly an homage to Douglas Adams, partly an attempt to make a movie out of a book that somewhat flies in the face of being "brought to life." The books were, for me, on the ultra-subtle deep humor tip, but it was years ago that I read them.

It's British humor, too... so it's a bit highbrow, philosophical and absurdist (ducking) in the best way.

I liked it, but it was no Airplane!

Looking back it wasn't that good but I've never read the book either.

I love books, the radio drama and the old BBC miniseries. The movie, however, stinks!

I listened to a movie review guy last week
he said that it's really for people that read the book

he said if you haven't read the book, it won't make much sense, and you probably won't like it, so he didn't give it a good rating because most won't get it.

Just got back from it...... I thought the original BBC production had much better acting. The guy who played Ford in this new version was brutal...

I knew from the first trailers that they'd butcher the book...

Saw it anyway, yep, not very inspiring.

The radio show runs about 5 hours long, and quotes the book word for word... Obviously a 2 hour movie will disappoint.

the movie was great, They did NOT butcher the book, I only spotted 3 or 4 differences between the two.

(1) In the start of the movie where Ford gives everyone beer and chips so him and Aurther could go to the pub was awful. the book's version was much better, but would have been lost on an american audience.

(2) The party was not mentioned until much later

(3) Trill was NEVER captured by the vogons and then rescued.

All in all the movie was fucking sweet! If anyone remembers correctly, the original 1981 movie was the first two books together, as was the radio series. the actual book ends before they all get to millyways (The resuraunt at the end of the galaxy)

-Loki-

by the way right now i'm watching the original movie got it from netfilx

True, you have to have a certain sense of humour to appreciate Douglas Adams, who wrote the screen play before he died, so if Road Trip or Lampoons are funny for you, this is not the movie for you.

I think it needed more inserts from Stephen Fry as The Hitchhikers guide, becasue in the book that is where the humour is really.

It's the absurdity that makes is funny. Like this

AdultNex is one of those guys who complains about free porn and pirates stealing his work, yet has no problems stealing other peoples work.

I think to appreciate this movie you need to have a certain sense of humour. Marvin was great, so was Arthur dent, Ford Prefect was a guy obviously cast in the hope to sell tickets in the US and fails miserably.

The books are the height of absurdity, to make a great film out of them takes the genius of the Pythons.

But as it has been said some of the humour in the film will fly right over the heads of many. If anything I think they should of made it even more absurd and fuck the guys who will never get it.

They can rent American Pie and have their comedy spoon fed to them.

the movie was awesome, i loved the books, and i loved the movie

you just have to realize that only about a third of the book can be fit into 2 hours of film, and they did a great job with the third they chose to bring to life.

if you liked the books, see the flick. if you haven't read the books AND you aren't into geek stuff (fantasy/sci-fi books, coding, system admin, etc) AND you don't dig on british humor, don't see this movie.

it requires imagination, even though it's pretty well brought to life on screen, and it requires the ability to enjoy the senseless (much like this post).

Open your mind.. and forget about car chases, cops and explosions...

Man if it doesn't have people on airboats chasing each other through shopping malls that just happen to be on fire... i guess it just ain't shit in america. damn dude open your mind and have a little fun. Not every movie is going to be perfect so just sit back and enjoy the ride or leave the fucking theater and shut your goddam yapper.

For anyone that hasn't seen the movie... it's silly english humor bent toward the geeky side. If you aren't smart and open minded you're fucked and should just stay in your trailer.

The books are 10 x better than the movie is... but that still leaves you with a pretty good movie.

The plot is different to the book, but then the plot of the radio series and tv series where also different because Adams was never very happy with the plots and kepy pissing around with them.

I don't know why I bothered writting that so far into a thread, cos no one is gonna read it.

I quite like the casting of for Ford, I thought Mos Def did it pretty well. But he probably was the weekest casting.
