Google targetting BLOGS ???
The start of BLOG squeezing?
**Google trying to patent news ranking by quality By Lisa Baertlein Thu May 5, 5:43 PM ET Web search leader Google Inc. has applied for U.S. and international patents on technology to rank stories on its news site based on the quality of the news source, according to patent applications obtained by Reuters on Thursday. Google's (GOOG - news) search engine now automatically scours some 4,500 news sources and highlights stories, typically by popularity and timeliness, although Google does not disclose full details of its ranking system. Google News site gathers article from disparate news outlets such as ABC News, Voice of America, the Christian Science Monitor, the World Peace Herald, Xinhua, Reuters, Bloomberg and the Los Angeles Times. Industry watchers said that over time Google News has come to depend on more established news providers for its content. A Google spokesman confirmed that the company has applied for the patents but declined further comment regarding whether the company will use or is already using the technology. As Web logs and other commentary sites proliferate, postings from some have received prominent play within search result pages and on online news-gathering sites. Sometimes, such postings have carried biased or inaccurate claims. The technology Google is attempting to patent may help the company choose the most reliable information sources, although some Web commentators have said it will create a bias toward mainstream news sources.*** http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20050505..._dc_3&printer=1

try doing something original like writing a creative post on your blog more than 1 sentence and a pic with a link and you'll probably be alright

Try a few searches for yourself and see what pages u see in listings..........when i was searching latest NCAA basketball scores a while back the top 3 sites were Blogs - depending what words u typed in. Google is also thinking of letting big business buy banner ads on top of results pages as another way to combat less relevant results and make more $$. I cant see google making any money off blog dominated listings.

The yellow bit is commentary by a journalist. If you read carefully, he doesn't source anything in that paragraph to Google. His only source is "some Web commentators". The rest is his own speculation.
Journalists hate blogs, because blogs expose their laziness and stupidity. Google patented something that makes it easier to tell the difference between The New York Times and the West Karachi Fish Wrapper. The story doesn't have anything to do with blogs -- it was just used by a blog-hating journalist to say "we're good, blogs are bad." |
