When I eat by myself at a restaurant I tip $2.50-$3.00. Cost of food is usually about $9-$10. I'll give $4 bucks if the waitress was absolutely outstanding.

oh, if you don't tip high, tip with $2 dollar bills. trick. People remember you for years if so.

I've never worked for tips, so i like to tip big. but the $2 trick works. They remember you for years.

I used to always give $4 or $5 bucks. But then I realized that was much too high for a single person. I realized that after I worked at Denny's. It was common for families to leave just $3 bucks. I think for a single person $2.50-$3.00 is generous especially if you frequent the same restaurant like I do. That $2 dollar tricks sounds good, but where do you get the $2 dollar bills? Will Banks give you them?

Karma and practicality converge nicely in the case of a small check. If the check is $5 and I give the server a $10, it has such a greater effect than the same tip amount on a larger bill -- mostly for being unexpected. You'll get a smile, and -- if you should ever return to the establishment, you'll be remebered. As a rule I would say that I hugely overtip on small bills and tip "very well" (>20%) the rest of the time. Most people tip badly. As a result, most servers are pessimistic, but I would have to give the server $100 bill at 8PM to get the kind of reaction I can get with a $10 at noon --

I usually tip 20 percent. The only restaurant chain that has been ultra good with service has been Red Lobster :-)...they get 25-30 percent.

True. but I like to tip.

When I buy coffee, i expect 10$ for the drink. if it turns out to be 4$, hey, next time I show up, i get special treatment. I also hope the money spreads on. nice, but hey....I like stimulating the economy.

I waited tables and bartended in college and anything around 15-20% is expected for good service. Anything more and you'll be remembered and you'll always get good service in the future. Anything less and you'll still be remembered, but for being a cheap ass.

And for the LOVE OF MIKE never leave a shitty tip then asked the waitress for her phone number. Cheap is NOT sexy. I was always amazed at how many guys thought that was ok....

The only problem with that notion is that some people blame the server for something out of their control. Like if the food was a little late. It may be because the restaruant was busy or their short on staff.

in the USA i tip 20%, sometimes more if the service was above average... in thailand i they take 10% for a service fee, but i usually tip a couple bux on top of it... just because im not sure if the waiters see much of that service fee or if the restaurant takes a portion...
