I bet this guy feels like an asshole

I remember having to tell my friends and family to use Google because it was way faster and more accurate than hotbot and webcrawler and had no ads...

I used to use altavista. I only started using Google because altavista went to shit and nothing else was relevant.

Didn't Yahoo buy out Altavista? I used to use Altavista as well, I remember when it was No.1 back in the day.

He was right. Hype is carrying it upward and the super high value is opening other doors for google. This is the opposite of a vicious cycle... Its a 'why the fuck dont i ever get this lucky cycle'

Altavista turned to crap, definitely. It used to be up there in terms of usage until Google came along. For some time there, "SE"s like infoseek, lycos, etc were less concerned with delivering REAL search results as they were about building media portals, etc. Yahoo was slipping into this trap as well. The distraction and financial turmoil wrought by the Net bust of 2001 didn't help either. Regardless, it's good to see Google push the SE players' focus back on relevant and useful search results.

I've made a good $40k on google if I were to sell it today. I remember getting the fortune magazine analyzis with the two dorks on the front "should you buy google or run for the hills" and I just laughed at the negatives. Laughed all the way to my broker.
