seems like you protected the files for that user only in an NTFS format.

XP has the option of protecting your files from other people.
try creating a profile in your new installation with the same user name and password as your old installation

if youcan boot to that installation, do so.
then remove the file protection....forget exactly where it is........somewhere in my computer properties or my documents properties

don't know, i think it's an xp thing. best bet is to boot to your hard drive and copy the files over then grant access to everyone in the security tab

just re-read your post, you need to create a profile with the same password...i think it's the only way to do it.
there are places that i've found through google that can recover your password but i never tried them

dude it seems that you used the windows file encryption function on your files. NTFS won't block you from opening your files on the fresh windows install. Every windows version comes with it unique decryption code what means that your files won't be accessed on different windows. to decrypt the files you must recover your old windows and do this from there.
