never had a dog before but I want one - give me your 2 cents

ok, I have no clue abut dogs, but I want to get a small one in the very near future, so what do I need to know - talking about the very basics???

For example what's better - a female dog or a male one? What happens when they're in heat??? I remember my mother's cats were driving us nuts during their mating periods, are dogs the same?

How many times do I have to feed the dog in a single day???

...... and so on

Dogs are great, but def. a bit of work.

Heat... get the dog fixed... problem solved.

Female or male... its all in the training

Feed twice a day, walk 2-3 times a day.

Instead of creating more demand for the puppy trade why not just go out and rescue a dog that needs a home?

Millions of dogs are put to sleep every year because jerkoffs go out and buy puppies and then give them up as soon as they realize taking care of an animal takes time and money.

If you insist on a purebread dog there are rescues that focus on specific breeds.

female dogs are more expensive than the male ones... that's because they can reproduce and all. when my dog is in heat, he keeps on making pumping movements (just like the dog in Meet the Fockers).

puppies should be fed thrice a day but once the dog becomes an adult, feeding twice a day is enough.

what dog would you like to have?
toy, small, medium, large?
hairy or not?
guard or show dogs?

now, take this quiz to find the best breed for you: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/search.htm

there are dogs that are high maintainance, meaning they need to be very active and you may need to take them for a walk more frequently than other dogs. dalmatians are high maintainance. it depends really on how much time you are willing to put up.

I have 2 mini dachshunds - the weiner dog you are referring too. Smart and love to please. But, very stubborn and inquisitive. Potty training went great for the first little bit and now we've stalled to where I find an accident every few days for no reason.

I would recommend getting only one dog. And do not buy a puppy from a pet store. Please find a licensed breeder at least. Breeders are really easy to find and can give you some real quality advice on what dog is right for you.

Personally, I wanted a shiba inu. They get up to about 20 lbs, are a small dog with a medium sized dog stature, are extremely intelligent and clean. They take well to training too! But my wife insisted we go for cuteness and thus I am stuck with two adorable weiners...

Get a yorkie, and don't listen to those who say they are disgusting dogs, it's not true.
I have a yorkie puppy now and it's so much fun.
The are very loving and a lot of fun dogs, some breeds just boring..but not yorkies.
I ahve also airdale terrier and she is sleap all the day and night and i don't like it.
yorkies always will make you good mood

About felame or male...well, i have a male, but many people say that its way easer with a biches, because they don't mark in the house, and the heat its' very easy if you get a yorkie, because they are so smal...that you hardly can see it.
They eate very little (again, ebcause of the smal size) , around 50 gram a day.
and they can fo to potty at you house, you dont need to walk outside with them...my puppy make pee/poop on the papres, but i am planing to take him outside when he will grow.

pay a lot of attention to genetics. The breed determines a LOT about the dog's character and behavior.

a chiwowa is a nervous little bastard, it will bark at every little noise and it will bark at everyone who comes into your house. A good alarm dog, if that's what you want. I hate those yappy things.

A shitzou is a good lap dog. calm temperment, loves to lick you but you can discourage that if you don't like it.

Jack russel terrier is very energetic but not too yappy. Small bundle of energy, a good choice if you want a dog that will do tricks and play with you.

Tons of other breeds, just look them up.

also, definately get yourself a dog kennel. You'll want to lock the dog up in the kennel when you're not home or you'll come home to chewed up shoes, furniture, etc. Not to mention poo in the house. When the dog matures and is house broken take the door off the kennel and it becomes dog's home. Dogs actually like being confined in a kennel, it's a small safe place for a dog, they like places like that, resembles the kind of places they would make a den in the wild. Make sure the kennel is solidly built or the dog will make a racket when he bangs against it. (wire kennels suck, I have one. The solid plastic ones are much better.)
