GFY and Sept 11th

I still remember like it was yesterday. I was away on a 2 month vacation in Europe, sitting in an internet cafe in peaceful and relaxing Venice Italy. I was reading my email and of course reading GFY.

All of a sudden a post came up on GFY saying a plane crashed into the WTC. What shit I thought. Thinking it was a joke, a real sick joke I moved on to read another thread. Then I noticed another post, and another, and another , and another.

This was no joke. Posts were coming in like crazy about a plane crashing into the WTC. Then pics were being posted.

I tried to get more info by going to cnn.com but the servers were overloaded, and cnn along with EVERY news website i could think of was not loading in Italy.

I went back to GFY to get more info on what the he;; was going on. Then another post comes up and says ANOTHER plane hit the other Trade Center Building. Up to this point i was silent and calm. After reading about the second plane, seeing pics on GFY and then reading rumors of other planes down and explosions at the pentagon I stood up from my seat and told everyone in the cafe what was happening. Internet cafe's are packed with tourists, many American. Some bitch in the cafe told me to shut the hell up and didnt believe a word of what i was saying. I still remember her bitch voice saying "yeah right asshole" as i told people in the cafe.

There was no proof of this, only GFY. Everyone in the cafe was trying to get access to some news website, and like me they failed. The ENTIRE cafe was on GFY. EVERYONE.

The bitch and several others thought GFY was some hoax website and were becoming vocal against me. My wife being the tough cookie she is stood up and (and if you know my wife) put the bitch in her plave with an earful till she shut up.

Refresh after refresh we were reading gfy for our news on the other side of the world as to what was going on back home.
It was like a bad dream. We ran back to our hotel and turned on the tv. Couldnt understand any of the language on the TV but saw pictures that said a thousand words.
Later we found British CNN on one of the chanels and we spent 2 of the 3 days of our Venice Vacation watching TV.

IT is a day Ill never forget, and I still cant believe GFY was the News source of Venice Italy for the short period of time this news first came out.

Reading some of the old GFY posts from 9-11 sure brings back lots of distrubing memories.

i found gfy a few weeks later, one of the first threads i read was about the (fake) pic of the guy on the wtc with the american airlines plane coming up behind him.

i had just gotten off work (graveyard shift) when i heard the news, i was driving home listening to the radio when i heard the pentagon was hit, then i got really fuckin scared. i think i only slept about 2 hours that day, and the week following, maybe 30 hours max.

Try to imagine being on vacation not knowing what's going on and coming to gfy seeing a thread like these for the first time.

Cant even describe the feeling of shock and confusion I felt.

one thing that was said over and over by many was "this just doesnt seem real"

This day, and the first hour of finding out just seemd like a bad dream. It seemed so unreal. Just way to hard to believe.
And to be away from home so long, eventhough this wasnt on the westcoast made me seem so helpless. and scared.

The wife and I had plans to FLy back to Italy this month to make up for time lost over this event.

We changed our mind and have decided to fly to NewYork for vacation instead in 2 weeks.

We've never been there before, and I think it would be cool to go to New York one year after the fact. Im not sure how tourism has picked back up in NY, but going in September will be special for us at least.

Looking forward to it.

I stopped in an internet cafe while in every city on vacation!
All of which I checked out GFY!

It was fun up until sept 11th.

I even had tons of pics i was gunna post of the vacation, but after the attacks the whole idea seemed pointless.

Perhaps Ill share the pics of the vacation next week.
A year late, but I still have em!

I was in my office at 8 est, listened to a cd on the way in

First I heard was from an Aussie friend on MSN messenger, he said a plane hads hit the world trade center. I asumed he meant a cessna or some small thing.

Few minutes later my Dad called. He satarted to talk to me about some general shit, I said wait turn on the TV, I think somethings happening. He turned it on an I heard his reaction in the background.

I tried to get CNN, MSNBC etc for a while. I eventually loaded bbc.co.uk and saw a second plane had hit.

Then my Dad called me and said you better come over this looks bad.

As a pulled into the drive th pentagon was hit.

I watched CNN with my Dad and stepmother, my stepmother basically in convulsions through fear.

I though all along they would collapse given that damage. Then we watched as they collapsed right behind that that guy from CNN (jeff greenfield?). He said 'there are no words'. And there really weren't.

After that I lived CNN on and off for 2 days.

I am english, living in Canada at the time, but the moment those towers fell it really felt like time stood sitll and that things were somehow not quite the same as before.

I cant even imagine what people living in NY were feeling.
Horror cant even define what they were probably going through.

Im sure some fuck will probably post "well the people in Isreal" or "the people in Palenstine" go though this all the time, but its one thing to have this happen there where attacks are sadly common, and to have it happen here where it is a total shock and unexpected event. We didnt even have time to think.. this was so unexpected shocking isnt even the word.

it was a sad period for everybody, the mood was very bad after the event and we had several conflicts which were result of the interest each part had for the tragedy. As Boneprone said, it was like a bad dream. Still whenever i recall the event in my mind it looks like a bad dream...

I was chillin in the Bahamas trying to give myself a little time away from the hustle and bustle of the city life.Someone came knocking at my door and told me there had been a plane crash into the WTC. Immediately I turned on the TV in my room and watched in horror the second plane crash. Immediately I thought how in the hell am I going to get home and how are my family and friends in NY doing?

A close buisness associate of mines passed away and also his buisness was destroyed as a result. His brother has since moved to Houston to restart the family buisness and they are doing well. The day will never forget my memory but somehow I always knew that another country would do this

I had worked the entire night on the TGPDevil script which was still in its infancy and had only been in bed an hour or so when my girlfriend came in and told me a plane hit the WTC. I remember thinking "so fucking what". I guess in my head I just assumed it was a little cessna or something like that.

I heard her scream from the living room a few times, but she has a penchant for drama so I continued to ignore her. Finally she came in crying and told me to "get the fuck out of bed, they hit the Pentagon, WW3 just started". I still thought she was full of shit until I hit the hallway and heard Tom Brokaws voice cracking like he was in tears. That sent a chill down my spine before I even saw the TV.

Needless to say, I couldn't believe what I saw. The next few hours were spent crying, gassing up the cars, calling friends and family, and buying ammunition and food. I really didn't think I would need it, but it gave me something to do instead of sitting at home feeling helpless.

It does seem like it was just yesterday... and it was all a bad dream.

I was surfing gfy when it all went down and turned on CNN as soon as I read the thread.... I knew then that I would always remember that day and gfy no matter what happens to me in the next 50 years. It was wild to see how this board was the news for so many people...

Right now the Dave Matthews Band is on the roof of the Ed Sullivan Theater in NYC playing on the Letterman show... Now, I hate Dave Matthews almost as much as the towel heads who did this.. BUT... the views of the city are awesome. They must have camera booms on the 4 corners of the roof cuz they are taking some killer shots of the cityscape !!

I had worked until 3 or 4 a.m. the night before, grabbed a couple of housrs sleep, and staggered into my office to check for an email ... logged into another board and my mind didn't register what I was reading. I fucking ran downstairs and turned CNN on just in time to see the first tower fall. As the day unfolded the first thing that ran through my mind was my girlfriend's son, who is a USMC Captain and was onboard the Peli Liu on a WestPac at the time (and sure as shit, he was one of the first in country; he and his men came back safe, with only one of them getting a minor wound).

Rage is the only feeling I can remember. Rage and frustration - I'm too god damn fat and too god damn old to go back into the Navy. I would have gone back in last fall, if there had been a chance in hell they would have taken me.

9/11 was a terrible day that I am sure none of us will ever forget. Less than 2 weeks before the attacks, I walked over the Brooklyn Bridge, admiring the twin towers. I never thought they were that good looking, but damn they were big. I sat down in a park across the bridge, just realxing, and looking up at the towers, amazed by their size. Little did I know they would be gone 2 weeks later.

I don't know if any of you had a chance to get to NY to visit Ground Zero, but I went up there in early January, a couple of days after they opened the viewing platform. A friend and I stood in line for about two and a half hours before we got our two minutes on the platform. It was some sight... I felt sad and mad all over again.... but I'm glad I got to pay my respects.

What really got to me were the makeshift memorials that were still standing all around the area. Some of the stuff was REALLY heart breaking. Like this:

This thread got me thinking. After Sept 11th and before the US attacked, my parents moved from Knob Noster, MO to Kansas City. For those of you who are not familiar with the name, Knob Noster, Missouri is the home of Whiteman Air Force Base and also the home of the B-2 Spirit Stealth Bombers.

Ever since Sept 11th there was a sharp increase in military aircraft coming and going. My parents lived directly in line with the end of one of the major runways at Whiteman so when I would visit them I got to watch the planes coming and going. I saw it all, stealth bombers, stealth fighters, conventional fighters, B1 bombers, even a British AWACS just after the 11th.

My favorites were the stealths. Before they take off, you can hear a massive roar in the distance. It sounds VERY different from a regular plane. When I heard that roar, I would head outside. Stealths usually passed over the house at a distance of a few hundred feet. It was always a rush to watch them. They are freaking huge. I got to know their routines. Pretty regularly a Stealth would take off and another would land a short time later. This was repeated around the clock at pretty regular intervals. In between stealths, a fighter or two would come and go.

The day I was helping my parents move, I noticed there wasn't as much outbound air traffic. I thought it was a little strange but I figured that things were settling down after the 11th. About mid-afternoon I heard the familiar sound of a stealth on the runway. This time it seemed louder though. It progressively got louder and louder. Finally a stealth took off. Followed by another, then another, and another, and another. In all, 6 stealths left in less than 10 minutes. After the last stealth left the roar continued. In just a few minutes 10-12 F-15s took off in the same direction.

I knew something BIG was up (no shit, huh). I glanced down the street. Two houses down lived a very nice lady whose husband was a stealth pilot. She was in her driveway waving in the direction of the roar. The following afternoon I got a phonecall from my Mom. She was swearing like a wounded sailor which she never does "It's started, we're bombing those motherfuckers. It's about fucking time."

I was about 30 miles from home in another town but I HAD to see what was up. I stopped in a little bar & grill in Topeka, KS and ordered a beer and watched CNN with everyone else who had filed in. It was such an amazing feeling finally getting revenge and hearing the cheers from the bar during Bush's speech.

I was on a plane when it happened, a flight from London to Dallas. This was a British Airways flight, with TV sets in the seats. As I was flipping through the channels, I looked at the auto-updating flight path on the screen. It seemed we had done a 180 turn not long after passing Halifax. I thought it was just something wrong with the system, but after about 10 mins the captain came on the speaker and said US airspace was closed, so we had to land at Gander airport, in Newfoundland.

Once we landed there, as the 3rd plane of a total of 39, we were informed there had been a terrorist attack in the US. Then the captain turned on the BBC World News radio through the speaker, and we learned that the two planes had crashed into the WTC.

Sat on the plane for another 7 hours, while other planes from all over Europe landed. This is a small airport, and is was PACKED after all those planes landed.
So, after 7 hours, we disembark. We were lucky though, some of the other planes did not get to disembark for close to 30 hours.
Now thats a long time to sit still in an airplane...

Then we were driven to a church, where I along with everyone else on the plane, slept on the church benches. For 3 days.
People were very nice there, I am extremely thankful for all the help we got when we were there. This is a small town, quite far away from other civilization, and all of a sudden close to 10,000 people need to eat and sleep somewhere. They did an extremely good job at accomodating us there, I had plenty of food, and got to take a shower after 2 days.

Then, after 3 days sitting in this church, we were taken back to the airport, and then flown back to London, UK.
I was thoroughly searched 3 times before I was back in Copenhagen. And we were not allowed to even stand up in the airplane on the way back to London. Actually there were 3 arabs on board, one of them flew first class, and one was his servant I think. They kept to themselves.

Here is a pic of the airport:

Wow, cool experience, boneprone. Glad you shared it with us. I wonder what the bitch thought when she finally seen it on TV.

I remember that day, too, I found all my information from GFY, as well. Finally, CNN loaded, which was the only news site to load, and they had the index.html file down to about 40 bytes - I guess they were trying to save b/w, and trying to update the mo fo as fast as fucking possible as new data came in. That was weird just in itself - to see professional news website look like a grade 2 student made it - you knew some kind of shit was happening to cause that...

Yes, I still know how I was feeling when I read:

"Fuck I just saw that second hit live on TV and the anchor just out rightly said 'this has to be deliberate'. Guys, I may be living in the UK but I am still an American and my prayers are with everyone back home."

Crazy shit for me just reading it, let alone thinking about what Sjayne was thinking as he seen it happen live. I remember watching those videos over and over in disbelief - it was surreal.

The kids and I had stayed at my parent's house the night before. Mom came in and woke me up telling me a plane had just hit the WTC. A BIG plane. I told her it was a terrorist and she kept saying "no, it just flew off-course or something..." I jumped up and had every tv in the house going, the talk radio, I was trying to get to CNN and MSNBC on the web with no fucking luck.

Before the second plane came I was hitting hubby up on a Nextel radio, interrupting his Cisco class and telling them to get their asses to a tv. The entire class ended up leaving the building and going across the street to a pub because they couldn't find a tv on their floor.

My Dad works at the Norfolk Naval base and they wouldn't even let him leave to come home, everything got locked up tight and this whole area was under "flinch and you're dead" mode for a long time just because of the naval base being here. They later proved that some of the Al Quaeda group had been through the base taking pictures of the buildings and the ships - got through with a temporary Guest pass. Nice, huh?

For the longest time my oldest kid (was 3 1/2 when it happened) was convinced that all planes crashed...

Rage. Rage and an incredible sorrow... and we still don't have the fucker that's responsible. I want his head on a pike at Ground Zero.

I remember being woken up by my mother with a phone call that the WTC had been hit by a plane. Being a New York native i kinda just shoved it off, asked if we knew anyone on the plane "no", and went back to bed. Then i got woken up again by my roommate, so i filed out of bed flipped on the tv, and there it was, burning building number one. i called my dad who owns the entire neighborhood of buildings across the river in downtown brooklyn if he was watching this, and he told me to come down to watch it with the news crews he'd already rented the building rooftops to. it's like a 15 minute trek, so the lazy bastard that i am, i told him thanks anyway but i didnt really care. keep in mind i still thought this was just some drunken pilot who was probably getting blowing by the stewardess and didnt realize how low he had been flying..etc etc. anyhow, i think it was 9-10 minutes later the second one hit, and i was actually in the middle of watching the news and writing an angry letter to a sponsor, when i saw what happened. right then and there, i knew it was a terrorist attack. i didnt need the media's bullshit questions on the matter, i knew it was a damn terrorist attack. then i was on the phone with my mother while she put our conversation on her firm's intercom, (which is a big thing, she told me no swearing before i got on, shes not too proud of having an internet porn son either) because they couldnt get local channels, and then the first tower came down. i swore like ive never sworn before. i went into a rage, like, who the fuck do these people think they are, come to nyc and take down our buildings, fuck them, kill em all.. yeah, then the second one came down, followed by people in her firm cursing up a storm, then mom telling everyone they could go home.. and that was the end of that. glued to the tv for 2 days, and glued to my websites' stat pages and watch people cancel like mad..

IT is a day Ill never forget, and I still cant believe GFY was the News source of Venice Italy for the short period of time this news first came out.

Reading some of the old GFY posts from 9-11 sure brings back lots of distrubing memories.
And to think your government and other EU governments (not to talk about the stupid UN) still oposes attack on Iraq. (and please don't start with the - "whats the connection").

Your story is well told and interesting nonetheless. Thx for sharing.
It was indeed a ground-shaking day. I was stunned and I am never surprised or "cought off guard".
I've seen terror acts before (some of you may not realize that but terror existed before 9/11), but seeing a whole nation (US) looses her virginity (and naivity) - US I mean was a sad and shocking moment for me. Such a scale of horror gives you a great sense of unrest - atleast me.

I was in Holland at the time of the attack.....just taking a break
went down rolled a good joint and turned on the TV. We only
had a UK Sky Box in the office so all channels were english only.
I was flipping channels and stopped at CNN. While doing my
puff puff pass routine with some of my friends I saw the first
plane hit the towers.......we laughed and said shit man...which
movie is this? We got to see it....we honestly thought it was
shownews featuring some new action movie.

It took 2 minutes and 3 replays before we realised this was
not some movie but that it was for real. We all couldn't believe
what our eyes were seeing. We saw it live happening as we
were watching CNN even before the attacks began.

3 days none of us worked. We have friends and business contacts
in NY which we tried to reach to check if they were ok. It took 5
days to get in touch with all of them.....they were all alright.
Those 3 days everyday we went into the office and watched
the news. Even though we were very far away we felt being
close. The world has become really small lately people traveling
all around the globe. No country is further than 18 hours away
from where you are......and that's just with a passenger carrier.

I can tell all of you people that even a shitty small little country
as Holland we were all very upset and almost everybody there
was thinking about the US and what they possibly could do to
support. I brought feelings of unity in many parts of the world.

Allthough in normal live we like to bitch and bash on almost
every topic or international issue it showed that when the shit
really hits the van.....those bitching people stick together let all
of their predigious feelings go and stand like 1 man behing the
people who need it.

At least Me and all my friends did and I know a lot of others too.

Excuse me?!?

Yet another WAR HAWK trying to drum up support for an issue long past its expiration date.

The GULF WAR and the constant hunt for non-renewable resources are the main contributors to the WTC attack - yes, extreme islamism is also responsible, but ask yourself what may have happened had a greedy oil baron like Dubbya and his Kissinger-connected OIL cronies NOT been shamefully and mistakenly "elected" to America's highest office??

It's painful to encounter people who callously and mistakenly believe that more DEATH is the solution to any problem.

Tell me something.... How many more innocent men, women, and children are you willing to take direct responsibility for murdering?!? Or are you just going to spout off something typical...

"blah blah blah....weapons of mass destruction....blah blah blah...we must protect the American way of living....blah blah blah...Oil at any cost...blah blah blah..."

I'm also waiting to see how you try to connect Hitler to Saddam Hussein - a completely inaccurate historical comparison.

I do not propose a solution - simply because a solution to the problems of the world is never easy to forge. One thing I do know is people who propose DEATH to solve any problem need a little more clarification.

Odd Feelign indeed that day, I am in Philly and the comapny I worked for at that time had a NYC office near the towers.

I worked mostly at the Horsham PA (outside philly) offices in sales and travelled to NYC quite often...

well, in the truck on the way in, plane 1 hits. I remembered a story my grandfather told me of back in the 40's an airforce bomber hit the empire state building in a bad storm, I figured it was a cessna or something little, then plane 2 hits, my father is a huge spy novel - movie buff, so I am like, this is real thing man, this isnt accidents.

Well, I get to my office, which was located across from the Willow Grove Naval base (fighter jets all over the place, etc). There was an airshow a few days before the attack so there were many many millitary aircraft there chillin on the tarmac. I am looking out the windows at this as the pentegon is hit. Me and my Manager are like, we have to get the fuck outta here, too many planes across the street man...

As I am headin home, my parents are frantically calling the house, they think that I am NYC. There are no phone lines available, nothing, internet is swapmed, no cell phone, nothing. My parents reach me a few hours later, They were hysterical, They had no idea I was sitting in my house 10 minutes away.

I knew a few people that lost friends, family, etc. It really was a shame that all those innocent people lost their lives as well as the familles that were affected afterwards, I hope that this never happens again to anyone anywhere. Life is too short to be mad at each other. Enjoy it while it is here, you only go around once.

I was watching my then 2 year old daughter that day while the girlfriend was at a college... I was sleeping late, so I slept through everything - until I was woken up by F-16 flying right over the house in Yonkers NY. I had a dream about my gf leaving a message about McDonalds Big Macs... but I woke up and played a message on the machine, "Americas under attack". I didnt even turn the TV on, I just called her up and she told me everything. WTC ARE GONE she said. Thats some bullshit, REAL bullshit - but when I turned on the TV, I was even more dumbfounded.

Now is the time for a new paragraph. Better yet, Im gonna end this post. Nothing else to say except that day, and the next 3 months after, was very bleak and depressing, wondering when my family and I will die from some fucksnots's nuke bomb or some shit. After 9/11, it seemed that craziest is possible, as anything is, and it made looking towards the future hard.

Man BoneProne..

I don't know what the fuck I would do if I was out of the country when the shit hit the fan..

I just read the 9/11 post and relived those same emotions all over again.. Total and utter shock.. I have never been so damn scared in my life.. I a bit numb now..

The thing I don't get it is.. we still had signups on 9/11 and the rest of the week.. and the MBZ dealer had sold more cars on 9/11 and 9/12 than usual..

now what?
