Let's see... so this single American guy, a former cook, joins the Navy and quickly realizes that he has no aptitude for or a deathly fear of flying. The albatross represents both his inability to fly and his anxiety about it.

So he shoots himself in a perfectly normal restaurant so because he can't live with the shame.

Let's see. He started eating the ALbatross, then thought back to his childhood in the "Rescuers Down Under" Disney movie, realized he was eating the very same bird that carried those cute mice from America all the way to Australia and decided to take his life. Being in the Navy was a coincidence.

If "no" that would make those two events unrelated.
If "yes", then:

2) Was it because it put him in fitting emotional state for suicide (for example by reminding him of something that happened in the past)?

if "no":

3) Was it because it somehow contained some kind of message giving him new information that made him want to kill himself?

He is disabled he gets ship wrecked one of his friends dies...his other friends take the body away and tell him they are going to get food.. They tell him they found a dead albatross when he ate the albtross he realises it was not albatross he ate before but his friend or maybe wife or child...hence he hits instant depression and shoots himself...sorry love I got it right no DVD player for you now show us your tits....

OK, here is the answer... Krome was close enough, so I'll say he is the winner.

The guy used to be a cook in the Navy. One day, there was an explosion in the kitchen. He managed to survive, but lost his vision. After days and days and days of being stranded at sea on life boats, the survivors started dying from starvation and their various injuries.

Finally, they managed to kill a few of the Albatross that were flying around their life rafts, so they had food. The blind man ate, and enjoyed the Albatross.

They were eventually rescued. After getting home and getting his life somewhat back in order, the man was craving Albatross, so he went to a restaurant and ordered it - raw, of course. When he took the first bite, he realized he was not fed Albatros on the boat... He actually was eating his fellow crew members. He couldn't live with the fact that he enjoyed eating people, so he killed himself right there, on the spot.

And there you have it.
