What language(s) would you learn? Does RosettaStone work?

Would really like to learn some other languages.. I figure Spanish (latin america) would be good and French... After that I'm not sure... Has anyone tried that RosettaStone.com system and how'd that work out?

Latin America Rosetta Stone is.. OK. I had no microphone so the best I could do was word identification and basic congijation. I got between the saltando/bailando/et al, and got tired of it. It's pretty pointless if you can't do the verbal.

I tried it a while back, wanted to learn Russian. I guess I wasn't really serious about it, cause I didn't learn shit. The software was really good though.

I learned some Spanish and Portuguese with it, but nothing compares to going to where they speak those languages and learning it there, on the streets, day in and day out.

What really sucks is when you forget the word for 'cucumber' in English, and have to find someone who speaks Spanish to translate.

Buy Pimsleur, seriously...Rosetta Stone is okay if you are taking a class in addition to using the software, but Pimsleur will have you speaking asap! It's pretty expensive, but available "most places"...You can ICQ me!

Lol same here! I did learn some stuff though I can't really communicate but I can read and listen somewhat successfully.

I like Rosetta... never tried Pimsleur.

Just read about RossetaStone on wiki and apparently the Russian version was ripped apart by some language expert or something.

http://www.pimsleurapproach.com/

It's interesting.. The US millitary uses Rosseta Stone but the FBI and CIA use Pimsleur. Looking like Pimsleur might be better.

I'm doing Spanish Latin America and Mandarin on Pimsleur and Rosetta.

I would recommend a dual approach because Pimsleur is instant conversational and Rosetta helps with vocab, reading, pronunciation etc.. plus mixing it up makes it more likely you won't give up.

The latest Rosetta version also has an audio addition that you can put on your ipod etc.

What other languages? Well depending where you live and what you do or plan on doing.

I chose Spanish since it it's the most widely used second language in the US and Mandarin because it seems pretty likely that those fuckers are taking over the world as well as the Net shortly and no matter how many years they learn English at school, most people prefer to communicate in their native language if possible.

India isn't far behind so Hindi would be a good third one if you have the time and DEDICATION.

I've tried rosetta and thought it was pretty cool but just checked out Pimsleur and really impressed by it

the price to get started is really cheap too, with Pimsleur it is under $50 and there is some free lessons on their website to give you a feel for it

I'm ordering the conversational right now, I wouldn't even want someone to give me it for free because the company has obviously done a great service in putting these together and deserve some support

Except if you look like a "gringo" and everybody there wants to practice English with you

I tried Rosetta Stone for French. The numbers were fun, but I had problems with words.

They do it like this...

une femme is your word and you have to select the correct photo. At no time do they give you the meaning. It's photo association all the way though. After femme for the girl, they'll do homme for the guy and then the boy and girl. That's how it works.

Not bad at all with single words, but my head was spinning when the full sentances started and the focus is on one word in the sentance and they aren't telling you want the other words mean.

I'm thinking an approach that uses a few different systems would be best.

I'm going to try Pimsleur. Looks like it might be audio books. No software? Worth a shot...

I'm using Rosetta Stone for Latin America Spanish and it's ok so far, but just started recently and I'm also using it in conjunction with a Spanish 101 textbook and http://www.spanishdict.com. I don't think it would work that great if you solely use Rosetta Stone though.
