Well, your lovely government today concluded a wonderful and elaborate sting to make a guy buy child porn and then arrest him when he went to pick it up at the post office.

Here is what your lovely government did. They sent Richard Leitenberger a letter and told him that they have a catalog full of child porn DVDs. And they said that it contains "taboo, very rare, forbidden and ILLEGAL MATERIAL". And they swore that "we are NOT a law enforcement officer."

And they said that if he wants the child porn catalog, all he has to do is reply and swear that he is not a cop and is not "trying to set us up."

And then they mailed him a full-color 200 page catalog.

And he went through the catalog and found some DVDs that he was interested in. And all the DVDs were "HOT !!! YOUNG !!! AND PINK !!!" and an "ALL NEW PRIVATE HARDCORE COLLECTION...DVDS ENCRYPTED FOR YOUR SECURITY. THE YOUNGEST !!! THE HOTTEST !!! AND THE SWEETEST !!!"

And he mailed the government $180 for the DVDs that he wanted. Actually, he sent it by Western Union.

The most outrageous part of this is that the government actually made child porn DVDs and mailed them to him. And then when he went to the post office to pick them up, they arrested him and said that he was in possession of child porn.

What the hell is wrong with this government?

definitely a pretty questionable act on the fed's part. that's basically entrapment no? iknow they fully expect people to look the other way when they say "but they guy bought kiddie porn!" and a lot of people do. i'm not saying we shouldn't be out busting pedophiles. but whats to say this guy ever even thought of it until they dropped it in his face an suggested he buy it from them? he may have been a little different, but there's no law against that, and could have very well never even considered viewing that sort of material prior to being enticied into it by the feds. shouldn't they be busy out busting the people who produce this type of shit, or people who they find actively in the kiddie porn trade without randomly contacting people and trying to lure them into it?

maybe they have some other information that is left out of the story. but if it's as cut and dry as it seems in this post, ya, it's just as fucked up on the law's part as it is buddy's part...

i am not defending the guys actions in any way, however i don't agree with the tactics used to snare him. sometimes you have to check your judgement and look at the situation. now had they laid out a trap and they guy walked into it. fine. but to me, this just sounds like they're out creating criminals. supply and demand as an argument for these tactics does not fly. they created a supply, and marketed that supply. the guy may very well have never done anything illegal up until this point in his life, and may have never considered it until having it offered it up to him int his fashion. go after people who are seeking it, setup a honeypot, track those who are actively engaging in the trade. don't go out creating criminals so you can say you're making grounds.

if you start allowing the law to pull fast ones like this and accept it as a justifiable action, simply because you hate the person they are after, it opens their freedom to stretch the rules in other cases too. even though you, and any sane person, would thoroughly despise the guy for his crime, doesn't mean you should just overlook the fact methods of entrapment were used to lure him out for an arrest...

It's already illegal to attempt to obtain child porn, and they already had evidence of that.
