Seems, although the 'chip' was invented in American, it was us Brits who decided to add salt, then an Irishman who added the flavours:
Initially, chips went unseasoned until a twist of salt was placed inside the bag, to be added when required. This idea was originated by the Smiths Potato Crisps Company Ltd formed in 1920.[3] Frank Smith originally packaged them in greaseproof paper bags which were then sold around London. The potato chip remained otherwise unseasoned until an innovation by Joe "Spud" Murphy (1923 – 2001),[4] the owner of an Irish crisp company called Tayto, who developed a technology to add seasoning during manufacture in the 1950s. Though he had a small company, consisting almost entirely of his immediate family who prepared the crisps, the owner had long proved himself an innovator. After some trial and error, he produced the world's first seasoned crisps, Cheese & Onion and Salt & Vinegar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potato_chip#Seasoned_chips |

My mouth is watering! I'm a hugh fan of salt & vinegar Pringles! If you like Pringles, you should try the Rice Infusions. Not only do they contain less fat but they are sooooooooo much stronger! Result all round! Also love salt/pepper kettle chips but they're a second!
