Do you need dedicated servers? (not a sales thread)
So, I've been a part-time webmaster for almost 5 years and system administrator (a damn good one btw heh) for 6 years. I work for a very well known company in US which offers dedicated servers and server management. Since I am in GFY I've read hundreds of threads about hosting/dedicated customers complaining about the service they get from their current hosts. I spent a while today looking at the prices all these companies offer and I know I can provide a much better service (dedi servers and support) than them and also much cheaper (I've personally dealt with techs from the most popular companies that post in this forum, discussing about migrations and such and I know they are not very good). Now, do you think there is still market available for a new but very good emerging company that can offer solid servers/colocation/support for a decent price? Looks like in the end everyone goes with the old companies no matter how many complaint threads they read.
I appreciate your sincere opinion here, hosting companies can post as well

Honestly, it's a mix of those options. It's really scary to put your business and livelihood on the line trying out a "new" host .. even if your current host has given you problems. The "good" news, I guess, is that a lot of people here don't have "real" businesses that require constant uptime and can take a "chance" on someone new.
I've had some downtime with my host recently that cost me a nice contract, and I can't seem to get an answer to my ICQ, but I still wouldn't go with a "new" service ... not for the mission-critical stuff anyway .. I'm looking at "established" places right now if I need to make a switch (i.e., if I don't hear from them). Also remember that everyone was new once, hehe. Hope some of that helps! And good luck. |

Hah well they actually own the servers so they should have root access in my opinion, and pay extra support if they break it of course.

I love my host, it's tech support, reliability, and pricing. So there's really no way in hell i'd move. Plus, many of us have tons of scripts/databases/etc, that a move is really not worth the hassle.
I've allready been screwed by a cheap/new host in the past - there's really nothing worse then losing all of your data/sites to a company filled with false promises. Your price structure would have to be very appealing to get webmasters to move. But with the right pricing you should be able to build a decent "new" customer base. |

What you need is a good way to start. I would give a few webmasters a free month hosting or something.. Just to get your name out.
Good luck!

Actually I was more interested in offering dedicated servers, but if I decide to go with shared hosting as well I will definitely do something like that.
