We were around before anyone called it "internet" and "BBS" was the name of the game. When people would wait hours to days for stolen Playboy centerfold scans. You know. About the same time the last mastadons trudged across the tundra, mile after mile.

Yeah, that, and dedicated servers were $2500/month.

I sold traffic to Ron Levy in 1995. Does that count?

I think it will be impossible to even try to guess who was the first adult sites on the net, there is just way to much and so many very small people/sites who came and went pretty quick.
We started by running a 4 line BBS back in 1992 (running ProBoard), somewhere around 1995 we was importing usenet to the board using GiGo (garbage in/garbage out) and offering email accounts, we started landofvenus in early summer 1997, but there was so much you never hear about any more like Cu-SeeMe, Iphone and some other video sites, jennicam, lots of people pulling child porn off usenet and making little free sites, and pulling all kinds of crap off usenet and makeing sites. There was tons of small no name webcam sites that just used ispy, which now days would not be called a site but back then was pretty cool.

cu-seeme was great for getting new members, as was usenet..not any more tho. netscape was the only browser for awhile, it was also the only one that worked with streaming video (jpeg push)... But I am pretty sure that the first sites are going to be small no name ones that no one remembers, they were probably free and voyeur or social type sites and making a book or anything else and naming anyone as the first would be an injustice to those.

I guessing he would not have been one of the initial pioneers in online adult but wouldn`t Marc De deserve massive praise what with the incredible success of ARS in the late `90s?

The adult INTERNET was very useless before the PROCESSORS came along - and we all know who were the first there

PS. Oh, and yeah, many of them are not here anymore but the ones with smart and good business ethics are

Actually I did record several preambles both adult and non-adult ;) Nothing that was even slightly pornographic though. I refused and since we were in the same office building as a broadcasting school, we had lots of talent for really cheap when they needed porn preambles made.

When I worked directly with the audiotext company all our girls were in Canada because the laws about what they could and could not say were a lot stricter in the US. This was back in 92-94ish.

RonL had one of the first live girl cams that I know of. The guy I was working for set up a sofa and a camera in the Canadian office (which was in a freaking strip mall) and IIRC, they used 900/809/etc numbers for the customers to dial in. It was so hideously jumpy due to the low baud rates that no one wanted to watch it. This was 93-94.

I also remember back in the days when DMR DIDN'T do any billing. ;)

That's roughly our time line also.

We ran KastleArchives as a BBS until the mid-90s (2 nodes running Renegade) - but we were also salting several usenet groups with our earliest content.

And yep, I still remember getting the earliest copy of Netscape from my first dialup IP provider in the late 90s...came on three 3.5 floppies We were still manually UUencoding and decoding the binaries to/from usenet.

But we didn't start actually making money on the web until we transitioned to a paysite format in 2000.

i know this really cool guy that started selling content he pulled off the web in the late
80's or early 90's in his family's garage and charging about $10/month for his membership. so this dude calls himself kevin to most but don to some of us. he runs a fairly decent sized company that has had some success since those early days. what's that company again.........oh yeah, he named it "TopBucks".

Damn, I can't imagine having been in this biz in the 90's. The Internet is such a baby though, all of us here are just in the beginning of this 12 or 13 year "old" business.

A key distinction here is are we talking about the internet porn or the first
porn web site. The internet was created 1973, the web in 1990 - seventeen
years later.

I started in late 1996 or early 1997 and many of the people suggested as
firsts weren't around then, though there was an established industry. iBill
had started in 1996, but CCBill wouldn't be until 1998. As someone else
mentioned these processors were key. Before them, very adult sites
were able to get merchant accounts to process payments. Laith launched
AdultCheck in 1996, which is how most of us got paid back in the day.
I would estimate there were about 5,000 people active in the business by
early 1997.

Yeah, weren't those the good old days. I was GSM of a company that lost a $10 million judgement to Playboy for putting those scans on CD-ROM in 1992 (the judgement finalized in 1995). Lee Noga (zmaster) had her own similar problems with Playboy and her then company "Lion's Den", that's when she started doing licensed content. I followed the same path about a year later. Lived on Ynot Bob's chat board back in the later 90's.

Those were the good 'ole days. There were no set precedents for the adult shows and they got so crazy a good many spent some quality time with Vegas Metro.

In comparison, Internext feels like a Girl Scouts convention.

ahhh... memories... btw, if anyone has Lee's number please shoot me an icq, I lost track of her around 2000. It would be good to touch base with her again.

I think I remember some of those cdrom suits...

Before the net we were pretty big in adult cd-rom sales, distributing, etc

Some nice margins back then - damm we pushed so many units

Lee's a great person - that's how we met in like 93-95 or so - sold tons of her busty babe series - very popular. Who were you with?

do you remember Goosebump?
